Panic Attack- Will Ativan and Paxil make them go away? Ok I was going cold turkey off of Paxil this week when last night the worst panic attack of my life hit me--I went to the hospital and they put me on Ativan, on a as needed bases (I have taken it only once today) And a smaller dose of Paxil (was on 40mg now 20mg). I am on the fence on going to battle with Paxil again....I don't know if I should just accept that I will be on it forever or if I should come up with a better game plan next time I try to come off but for now what I need to know is am I opening a new can of worms with this Ativan (it does help and I am not taking it unless I have a panic attack) and will my panic attacks go away after the paxil gets in my system??? How long does that usually take?

mighty_power7 replied: "i was on paxil for a while, and i decided i wanted to stop taking it. my doctor advised me to slowly wean myself off of it, so i ended up taking one every other day (instead of every day) for a few weeks, and then stopped altogether. you should talk to your doctor and i'm sure they can help you safely come off of paxil. good luck!"

my_profile_is_named_sunshine replied: "No"

pryan3 replied: "I'm not a healthcare prof. so please take this with a grain of salt. I was on Paxil when I was 21 or 22 for ADHD and mild depression. (Yeah really) In my opinion Paxil actually made my depression worse. At some point I had to take a look at REAL reasons for my depression, anxiety, and yes... 4 panic attacks from 21-24. Of course the root causes are individual. You're an individual. Talk to someone... a lot. Professional or otherwise... it's gonna scare you how quickly you can get to the root of the Panic Attacks if you just "purge". Talk talk talk. Be careful not to drive away family and friends... so a paid psychologist or social worker who doesn't really care about you or your problem is usually the first step. Anyway that's my 2 cents."

redrosefading replied: "I have no experience with Paxil, but I definitely know Ativan is an anti-anxiety medication that will help ur panic attacks. A relative takes a small dosage (0.5mg) 4 times a day as needed and it seems to help him. He has been on this med long term, takes it only when needed and has had no ill effects. Doesn`t seem to be addicted or else he could not skip doses as he does. So perhaps it will work the same for you. Good luck"

Baby Poots replied: "I am not personally knowledgeable about Ativan, nor can I attest to the usage of Paxil for your panic attacks; but, I can tell you that Paxil was very effective for my depression, anxiety, and homicidal tendencies. After being on Paxil for a month, I, and others, noticed a difference in my behavior. After two years, I was no longer a danger to myself or others. My initial dosage of Paxil was 10 mg, increased to 20 mg, then 40. In my opinion, Paxil saved my life and the life of those I envisioned as threatening me. My psychotic episodes have been abated for over 10 years, and I haven't taken Paxil for eight of those; but, I know the danger signs, and would not hesitate to get myself to a facility that could help me. If you do feel a panic attack coming on and have no one to help you, go to the emergency room of any hospital, tell them what is happening. If they "blow you off", create a scene. You may end up in the "psyc" ward or jail, but you will get some attention.!"

Nate replied: "Lorazepam.. ah, one of the medications that put me out of it more than any other has. Never helped with panic attacks or anxiety, but it made me high(which calmed me slightly). As for Paxil, I took it when I was 16. One month before a study in Canada came out linking teen suicide to paxil, I was an inpatient in a psych ward. Basically, paxil started me on my downward road. It helped my sister and my father with depression though. It depends on your own body chemistry as to whether ativan or any other medication will react well with you. Medications generally take 3-6 weeks to become stable in your system. If after that, your symptoms do not improve you should go off of it slowly with the help of a doctor. Never go cold turkey, especially with a history of panic attacks."

Ladyofathousandfaces replied: "well that is stupid to go cold turkey, what you want to make your symtoms 10 times worse then they were, you need to go and see the doctor who gave them to you and have him wing you off of them, so you will not get worse, you can learn to control your panic attacks, it will take time , and pratice, you need to learn to let them float pass or through, or over you, then you will find that they are not going to be interfering in you life that much any more. Now be safe, and get off the meds in a safe way, not cold turkey, that is just a stupid thing to do, and you proably already know that , so why do you want to make yourself worse, i think you need to go and talk with your therapist or doctor about this, you are stuffing things that need to come out, and be worked on, and you need to get off of the meds in a safe way. Now behave, and go and see your doctor, and therapist."

Brad Gen replied: "Hi, There is this guide by anxiety expert Joe Barry , he has taught thousands of people to be panic free without any medication using a revolutionary new technique, , its really a great guide , it should help you get rid of panic attacks forever in a few days Hope this helps you and wish you the best of health"

Panic attacks Paxil? Im 15 and just started suffering from panic attacks the doctor gave me paxil i havent tried it yet. does it work? how does it make u feel?

Hardheaded 88 replied: "I also was Prescribe to that. I dont take it because the side effects are really bad!!! ... plus its not really good for you either, but it wont start to take effect into like 3 weeks from now."

Meg replied: "well, some pills may work different for you than they do for others. i suffer from panic attacks,so i know what u r feeling. go a head and try it and if it doesnt work get the doctor to let u try some thing else good luck!!!!!!!!!!"

kiki replied: "It depends on the person. Paxil is a very good medication for panic attacks. I took it for about a year and it help alot with my panic attacks. Later on i was put on Zoloft witch is in the same family. I think both are very good for your problem. It takes upto 4 weeks before you will feel a difference."

dali333 replied: "im going to go out on a limb and ask you to consider calling your doc and asking for a different SSRI. research has found that paxil may not be the best medication for kids. and unfortunately docs will often use a drug that thier drug reps have left a bunch of samples of. anyway...i am not a doctor, and not a professional in the field, but i have been dealing with mental health issues myself for many many years and have had alot of experince with certain drugs. also, whether you try paxil or another SSRI...know that results will take a while. dont expect any changes immediately...it may take a couple weeks to a couple of months to reach full effect. if, in the meantime while the drug is building up in your system, you continue with panic attacks, you can call your doc , and he may help you with a short term fast acting drug that may get you through those bad moments. this is all strictly my opinion."

chinadoll replied: "I've been on paxil,Yes it does work.I was on it for 3 years. At first you may think that it's not working but you have to give it a chance.I'd say around two weeks or so you'll see a difference."

Jay W replied: "I was prescribed paxil over 7 years ago at the age of 29. I took it for 2 months and let me tell you, it ruined my life. I was prescribed it for depression, and after quiting it I've been fighting anxiety since then. The funny thing is after being on it for a month I tried to commit suicide because I was more depressed than ever. I'm not saying these effects will happen with you but personally I wish I could go back to that day and not take it. It's really screwed my nervous system up!"

Panic Attacks and Paxil? I have been on paxil for almost 4 years and I am weaning off of it. I was put on it for panic attacks. Is there anyone else out there who is doing this too? I want to be drug free and handle my anxiety and panic attacks naturally.

dstanley66 replied: "i hope one day i will be off paxil also, good luck"

crazy_green_eyes replied: "If the only way is a prescribtion drug you have to stay on it. You can try and controll that but if you can't you have to take Paxil."

Megumi D replied: "You don't say whether you've had any psychotherapy to go with the medications. Usually, the most effective approach to treating anxiety disorders is with both medications and therapy. The meds help to calm your anxiety to a point that you can really try the methods that the therapist can teach you to help you deal with anxiety and panic attacks. Then, as you gradually go off the medication, you are better able to use the new tools that you have learned in therapy against the feelings and thoughts of anxiety. If you haven't been working with a therapist during the time that you have been on medications, you should really give it a try, and then gradually, under you psych MD's direction, go off your meds. If you have done good strong work in therapy, you will have the tools to use to work through the thoughts and feelings that you may have associated with anxiety. It is very possible to overcome an anxiety disorder with good strong treatment and the willingness to try and to get better. Good luck with it--you will probably be very successful if you have good therapy tools to work with."

Argentox2 replied: "Hello Queen....Panic attacks are caused by an imbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. It is very difficult to correct this imbalance "naturally". My advice is to find the right medicine for you, take it for a period of time and then diminish it slowly. Then you will be able to handle your panic attacks naturally. As a former panic attack sufferer I tell you that the best you can do to prevent panic attacks is not being afraid of them. Panic attacks last a while, if you are afraid of them you will get another one, if you are not it will last a while and go. You could also try yoga (is excellent for breathing techniques) and acupuncture. Keep on fighting, after a period of time the panic attacks will be gone (if it happened to me it can happen to you!)"

HUGO & GABY replied: "I recoment you to take Seroquel for your Anxiety, pannic attack. No I guess there is o way to stop medication I had been taking meds since I was 8 ears ild and know I am 21 and still taking medication for panics"

John N replied: "Hi, There is this guide by anxiety expert Joe Barry , he has taught thousands of people to be panic free without any medication using a revolutionary new technique, , its really a great guide , it should help you get rid of panic attacks forever in a few days Hope this helps you and wish you the best of health"

Does medication (paxil) really work for Panic attacks? I would like to get on medication (paxil) for panic attacks and constant worrying but I’m even scared to get on it because everyone says that it will be harder when you try to get off it. I have been trying to deal with my panic attacks for years now and I think that now it has gotten worse because I totally obsess about it and I’m even scared to be by myself. I had blood work done a while ago and I was told everything is fine. I feel very guilty for wanting to take medication for my panic attacks. Is there anyone that can convince me otherwise? I have the medication and I dread taking it because I feel guilty but then again when I have a panic attack I take xanax which I also heard is bad to take because you can become addicted to it also. I thought of maybe trying to take some vitamins for nervousness and maybe like an herbal supplement for depression. I would like to get to the bottom of this and get answers as to why I get this way. I lost almost every job I had and when I’m home I get depressed and dread over it and I start panicking because I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m working again and still under my 90 day period but I have a hard time concentrating on work and I was also get trained and I got very nervous every time I would make a mistake. I don’t know … I really want to medicate but not for long. Does this medication help you even after you stopped taking it?

Regina replied: "You really need to be under the care of a good psychiatric nurse practitioner. Paxil did not agree with me. I was then put on Lexapro, as it has fewer problems associated with its use. I have taken Lexapro about three years. Occasionally I need a little more medication than what Lexapro provides, so I will add a small amount of Klonipin. I have had great success with these med. It will take several weeks for the Lexapro to help you, as it takes time to build up in your bloodstream, but the Klonipin will hold you steady until you are evened out. My very best wishes to you. Do not be afraid of the meds, they are a life saver in many lives. Never go cold turkey off any of these meds.........you need help from a good professional."

kay_flood replied: "no medication helps you after you STOP taking it... get real. You major issue seems to be that you don't actually know why you get panic attacks or what causes them.. knowing this could make a huge difference for you, and yes, there are identifiable causes. What I suggest you do is contact a mental health clinic near you and see about getting into a class or group for phobias and panic disorder. There are classes that will not only teach you the cause, but also teach you skills for coping with the results. Paxil is an antidepressant, and some think that depression results in panic, while others feel that panic is what results in depression... I ascribe to the latter, when my depression was gotten under control, then my panic disorder was revealed... once I got that under control thru the classes, I stopped taking all meds."

global trotter replied: "Yes, it will help rid of needless anxiety, panic attacks. Medication along with therapy combined is a goal to achieve a maximum result. Therefore you'll learn to control attacks w/o the medication ultimately. It's like a crutch that you need on broken bones, you have to use the crutches until the bones adhere. We all need some assistance at times when the situation becomes uncontrollable and interferes with everyday activities...Hope this helps ease your anxious mind. :):}"

Erika L replied: "I know exactly how you feel. Paxil is more of a long term thing... you take it for an extended period of time in order to decrease depression and thus decrease anxiety. However, if you are having constant panic attacks and need immediate relief, your psych will likely prescribe you a low dosage of paxil and a muscle relaxer such as lorazepam or klonopin. I have lorazepam for when I feel a panic attack coming, it works immediately to calm you down. Both can be somewhat addictive, but personally I'd rather have to take medication daily than deal with extreme anxiety."

william m replied: "Firstly, it's important to know that medication will not cure anxiety disorders. All it does is keep them under control while the person receives psychotherapy. There are often side effects to taking medication. Common side effects of anxiety medication include nausea, jitters, drowsiness and headaches. The more recently developed medications have fewer side effects, but side effects nonetheless. In order to totally eliminate anxiety disorders, you have to seek natural treatment. Here are some natural anxiety treatment programs you can consider... Hope this helps..."

Bushmaster replied: ""help you after you stop taking it" ha ha ha if it doesn't kill you it sure won't help you after you stop taking it. I took it and it was hell to come off of. It helped to lessen the anxiety attacks but the side effects of taking it were not worth it."

I've just been put on Paxil for panic attacks does anyone have any positive stories about this drug? All i can find is negative reports on paxil there must be some success stories!

Einsteininium replied: "Yes there are some success stories. It will probably decrease your panic attacks, but it could leave you feeling emotionless while you are taking it. That is not a fun feeling let me tell ya, anything except panic attacks and severe depression is better than emotionlessness."

amanda c replied: "I used it for a while, and although it didn't help the anxiety as much as later stuff like Zoloft and Chlorazapam, it definately is one of the few that didn't make you nearly as sleepy. It did relieve the chest tightness or pains well. good luck."

TORCH replied: "I personally take Alprazolam (generic Xanax) for not only Panic attacks, but also for anxiety. It works very well. Paxil, from what I believe is an antidepressant more rather than a panic disorder medication. I have not tried Paxil, but would like to see what it does in my situation."

Lucy V. replied: "I had an 18 yr. old friend who took it and i think it helped her; but i think she only took it several mo's; don't know why she quit taking it. I take Zyprexa. Have been on Zoloft before and 30 other types of NERVE MED'S; best wishes! It affects different persons--differently. and sometimes it takes several wks. perhaps even several months. - do discuss it with ur doc if ANY BAD SIDE EFFECTS. AND READ AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT Paxil on Internet and / or in Medical books. I ALWAYS USED TO GO TO LIBRARY AND LOOK MED UP IN PDR (Physican's Desk Reference) and If there are TERMS/WORDS that i did not know MEANING OF--I TRY TO FIND THE ANSWERS; HAVE FOUND LOTS ON INTERNET. / i THINK U CAN JUST TYPE IN : Paxil on search and get to helpful sites to HELP U --if you haven't already."

kanajlo replied: "I know a friend who improved while taking Paxil, although he complained of being a little sleepy in warm weather. Be aware of possible side effects but realize that the side effects are uncommon."

jezebel_lilly replied: "I took Paxil for Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder when i was 16.It didn't work for me.I prefer Xanax.I don't take it every day, only during an attack.Prozac helps control the P.D.,A.D. and depression.Meditation also helps.I do yoga at least 3 days a week to relieve stress.I would talk to your doctor about other options."

prettypixie1997 replied: "Paxil can make you gain a lot of weight, everyone I know that used it gained at least 20 pounds!! Xanax is the best."

thetaalways replied: "No I do not. And whoever prescribed this drug violated your basic human rights by not informing you properly about the negative effects so that you were able to make an informed choice whether to take it or not. You should not be getting these negative reports from other people. The FDA already has all this data and these drugs have "Black Box" warnings that your DR/psychiatrist are well aware of and are supposed to inform you about. Please consider the following: Psychiatry is a psuedo science, that cures nothing and has become a multi billion dollar industry, largely funded by government appropriation from tax payers dollars and the multi billion dollar psyciatric drug industry (anti-depressants are a huge part of this)that It has created and supports this through selling chemical lobotomies to the general public, and our children. Hooking our children and teenagers onto addictive drugs, not to mention adults. In 1994, psychiatrist Norman Sartorious, then president of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) declared at a meeting of European psychiatrists, "The time when psychiatrists considered that they could cure the mentally ill is gone. In the future the mentally ill have to learn to live with their illness." These "illnesses" are created by labeling them through a Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual which get thicker every year with new "lables".There is no scientific basis for their diagnostic methods. (Mathmatics Disorder, Herbal Remedies Disorder etc...) In the past they could get away with actual lobotomies, electric shock, drug induced long term "sleep" therapy, institutionalization etc. Today they use these lables to justify "treatment". These lables cure nothing. The drugs prescribed cure nothing and create drug addicts and cause suicidal and homicidal tendancies in people.(just a few of the many side effects) Check out these web sites for more facts about psychiatry. can i heal myself with exercise and eating right ,i stopt taking paxil to stop panic attacks well ive been off meth 7 years never hade panic attacks until two year ago went on paxil for 1 1/2 now im off it by choice cause it blocks your real feelings ,will the paic attaks com back or can i beat it with exercise and eating right

doc_holliday1863 replied: "I took Paxil for over two years and stoped and your eating right and excercise should see you through. Good luck"

Jade replied: "Exercising and eating well will definitely contribute to your plan of wellness. I would also recommend seeing a therapist for a few sessions to learn coping strategies to deal with the panic attacks. Part of this involves identifying your cognitive distortions (negative thinking patters; we all have them). I wish you all the best in overcoming your panic attacks!"

deepsoul20 replied: "Eating right and exercise are big factors in maintaining good mental health. However, if you still feel a little out of control with panick attacks, I would try different meds. I tried Paxil and it didn't work for me either. I'm on 30 mg. of prozac and take depakote for my mild bipolarism."

Mel P replied: "Did you ever deal with the underlying issue that mae you turn to Meth to heal your mental anguish in the first place? Probably the only thing that made the angst (a deep down abandoned feeling) go away so you kept using it. What you really need to do is find out where the panic attacks are coming from, is it a chemical imbalance, is it a thinking problem, is it a feeling that you are out of control problem, and then learn the real truth behind those situations. That is what is wrong with the medical professions now days, they treat everything with a pill and don't tell you the truth about the deluded thinking that winds you up, so you have the truth to bring your feelings and life back into reality. I hope you can find a true counsellor who can help you open up things in your life and clean out the baggage to help you get through the rest of it well and healthy..able to live it to the utmost fulfillment. Mel"

bubbles_4222 replied: "Maybe you should learn to control your panic attacks, instead of stop them entirely. I have learned many breathing exercises so that when I feel a panic attack coming, I can calm down and stop it. A few hours later, I can get to a safe private place and have a "freak out". After that, I call a friend I trust and talk it all out. HOWEVER: I do not have anxiety-base attacks, my attacks are personal, because I bottle up my feelings. If you attacks are based off of things like crowds of people, irrational fears, or similar, I have no idea!"

Az R replied: "After meth use? Not freaking likely unless you did it for a very short period. Paxil's not a good choice for anxiety management however, and since you've had drug abuse problems you can't play with the Benzos. Try one of the milder SSRIs like citalopram or sertraline, or if the panic attacks are pretty severe and recurrent, Remeron can frequently knock them down. At this point, you've injured your brain."

Why is that after I started taking paxil cr12.5 mg I've been having more panic attacks and mostly at night? I've been taking it for approximately six days. How do I know if the drug is working and if not what is the best way to deal with my anxiety disorder. Just for the record I have been diagnosed by several doctors too have the condition as well as mood disorder. Any ideas or advice?

hushcolours replied: "Hi, I'm not a specialist, so this is a personal opinon. I always think that health related issues should be posed to a specialist. Anyway, I suppose that your anxiety problem must be about how you feel that others may think about you/your acts ? Or about school/work ? I know little or nothing about this, but you must put in your head that most people are well intentioned and there's not reason why you should worry so much. Kind regards, Joséhttp://theartinquirer.blogspot.com"

Benzo D replied: "Are you taking other medications? If so, this symptom may be an affect of drug interactions. My guess is the answer is yes because Anxiety is usually treated with benzodiazapines initially. If not, it may be a side effect and you need to notify your healthcare provider so that he/she can adjust the dosage or change meds. Is Paxil an accumulative drug? In other words does it have to continue to accumulate in the body in order to stay in a therepeutic range? Yes. How long have you been taking it? It should definitely begin to show effectiveness within a week if the therapeutic level is reached. Do you take it regularly without fail? Same time every day? If not, it could effect the effectiveness of the drug. Sometimes drugs are actually given for their side effects rather than for what the manufacturer advertises. This may or may not work. It's a shot-in-the-dark for your healthcare provider. They don't know for certain that any drug is going to work for any particular person so you have to communicate with them so that they can help you. If they don't know you're having these effects, they can't do a thing for you. If you'll call him/her and let him/her know what's going on they may be able to adjust or change the med. Advice: this condition is generally treatable. If you'll continue to communicate with your healthcare provider, you'll probably find a workable solution that you are comfortable with; however, keep in mind that you may never feel completely normal but your symptoms may be controlled to the point that you can actually live with it. Hope this helps."
