What is the use of Famotidine 20MG and Diclofenac 75MG SR? I got back, knee and ankle pain and the doctor give this medicine. But i check in the internet and it say Gastritis & Ulcer problem. I am scared that i get the wrong medicine and it effect my health then i can't work anymore - pls help me?????

SZO replied: "Famotidine is an H2 receptor antagonist drug to treat hyperacidity, peptic ulcers & gastroesophageal reflux. While Diclofenac is an NSAID which acts as anti-inflammatory & analgesic for muscoloskeletal pains. The most common side effects is GI bleeding and ulcers. Most of the time patients are given ulcer-protective drug as prophylaxis during long-term treatment such as Famotidine."

I am 36ys male having reflux disease. My drug is famotidine 40mg daily is it safe to use it for prolonged time My question is it safe to continue on famotidine for years since I do not like to make operation. I can not leave this medication since symtoms like chest pain or burning appear on daily bases if I left it and what is more safer famotidine or ppi on prolonged therapy. thanks for your help

northernquine replied: "You really need to speak to your physician/GP about this as not everyone is the same and what might be fine for one person may not be fine for another - it depends on a number of other factors....which your physician will be able to take into account. Hope this helps"

why would the vet have given my dog Famotidine? Why would the vet have given my dog Famotidine while she was hospitalized? She was there for steroid treatment to see if it would help her problem with bad back and not being able to stand on back legs. She was 16.

Delilah replied: "Famotidine helps with keeping the stomach calm when on steroids. It's the same as pepcid. Steroids seem to hard on the stomach. It's just a preventative measure. Hope this helps Good luck"

BobDogg replied: "Steroids can cause the stomach to be upset or ulcers, so can stress of being away from home. The famotidine (pepcid AC) was to prevent these problems."

Nehanehalate replied: "Famotadine is Pepcid AC and is typically given in accord w/ other meds such as steroids to help prevent any gi upset. It was to help keep her comfortable."

Maray replied: "Famotidine is used to treat ulcers and gastritis (stomach/intestinal upset) in animals. It is also used to prevent ulcers when giving nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (ie. NSAIDs - such as Metacam or Rimadyl)."

frenchielove4ever replied: "Famotidine is used to reduce acid in the stomach. Sometimes certain medicines will make the stomach very acidic and this can help to protect the stomach. I'm sure the vet had a good reason."

andie replied: "acid reflux"

Kate A replied: "Good for your vet in being proactive in trying to prevent ulcers when on steroids. Steroids decrease prostagladin production. This means that the "bad" PGs that cause inflammation are suppressed. But, the "good" PGs are also suppressed. The good ones support blood supply to the kidneys and increase the mucous secretion in the stomach to protect the stomach lining from the acid that is normally present. Famotidine decreases the acid secretion via histamine 2 receptors. Other drugs that can also be given are Misoprostal (an analog of the good PGs) and hydrogen pump inhibitors like Prevacid."

How is Cimetidine (tagamet) and Famotidine (pepcid) different? How do they work differently through the body. If it does the same thing how can they sell as two different compounds? Please cite your refferences. Thanks alot!

steve_geo1 replied: "Cimetidine and famotidine are H1 antihistamines and act to prevent or ease "heartburn" or "acid stomach." They are indeed different compounds. They have different molecular structures. Different companies discovered and got approval for each, so the two compounds are sold competitively to do the same thing."

Troy replied: "Close, but they block the H2 receptor, not H1. They are two different compunds or the same class that block histamine induced acid secretion."

What is the difference between Tagamet (Cimetidine) and Pepcid (Famotidine)? I'm asking because my cat has been taking Prednisolone long-term, and I need to give something to prevent gastric ulcers. I've been giving Famotidine, but recently read that Cimetidine may be better. Opinions?

Doctor J replied: "Both drugs are H2-receptor antagonists, thus, both inhibit acid production in the stomach. They are usually prescribed for GERD, but neither drug treats the cause of GERD. Both drugs are dangerous. They cause malabsorption of some vitamins (e.g. Vitamin B12) and many minerals (e.g. calcium, zinc, iron, etc.). These drugs also cause bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, which is not a good thing! In fact, when researchers want to study bacterial overgrowth, they induce it with these types of drugs! In conclusion: avoid these drugs. Find a doctor that will work with you to 'find and fix' the cause of your problem."

Diane Y replied: "ask your vet!"

can i drink alcohol while taking famotidine? i took a famotidine earlier today. can i drink alcohol later tonight?

Hired Help replied: "Famotidine is in a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists. Famotidine works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces. The drug and alcohol is not a risky adventure but I bet the alcohol itself will do a number on your ulcer. For that reason drink at your own risk. Do not take antacids within 1 hour of taking famotidine. Antacids may decrease the effectiveness of famotidine."

Has anyone heard of Famotidine also treating bipolar dep? Some one in my previous question that answered suggested it.I guess it is newly being used to treat mood disorders such as bipolar and skitzo. What do you think? It is a ant acid so Im not sure

EmoPrince replied: "No. Never heard of it in my life. But I have bipolar 2 myself. Do you think it can help? Do you know anything about it?"

Jody replied: "I am bipolar and I take famotidine every night at bedtime. It helps acid reflux that is aggravated by my daily meds, neurontin, effexor, trazodone and Aleve for arthritis. Brand name: Pepcid Used to treat: chronic cough, Barrett's esophagus, chronic rhinitis and post-nasal drip, erectile dysfunction, acid reflux, helicobacter pylori, peptic ulcer, reflux laryngitis, shock, travelers' diarrhea."

what would taking famotidine do to you if u dont have to take it? I have that acid reflex and i am taking famotidine it was perscribed to me to take it twice a day until im told to stop takeing it. I missed a dose and since the day i missed it my stomaches been burning. But even before i started taking the pill it was burning. But when i started taking the pill it was just occasonal burning. but since i missed that one dose its been burning.

shawn replied: "famotidine causes acid production in ur stomach to decrease .acid causes ur burning sensation....... if u still have burning sensation u can change over to other drugs like omeprazole,pantoprazole,etc....or even a combination of drugs to get rid of a bacteria called h.pylori...which u may have in ur stomach...which causes acid to attack ur stomach.... so stopping fam is not causing ur burning sensation... ask ur doc...too"
