Does a burst of Prednisone make you gain weight? Had a severe asthma attack and was given 60mg of prednisone the first day, then 50mg for 5 days. Now I'm weening off of it. It's been 10 days so far and I've gained at least 5 pounds. I have another week of pills and am starting to get worried. Does a burst of Prednisone make you gain weight?

ian18 replied: "prednisone is a steroid and there are alot of side effects associated with it. weight gain can be one. im sure this is why you gained a little weight"

Sarah G replied: "Any corticosteroid, which is what prednisone is, will make you gain weight. My sister is a nurse and has an awesome book on prescription drugs called Davis' Drug Guide For Nurses. It is much easier to understand than my step father's-the pharmacologist- book-The Merck Manual of Drugs."

chantal m replied: "Prednisone only gauses weight gain if taken for a prolonged period of time (months and years) ... do not worry ... 2 weeks of prednisone will not cause you to gain weight. Hope this helps, C"

How long will the prednisone side effects last? I just finished a dose of prednisone where I was to take 3, 50mg tablets for 4 days. The side effects are really discomforting and I was wondering if anyone knows how many days it will take for the effects to wear off.

sokokl replied: "It could take a few days for the side effects of the prednisone to wear off, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say."

Amir S replied: "OK last year i had an asthma attack. and was hospitalize for 6 days. each day i had to take this disgusting medicine called prednisone. each day the doctor came in and said :ready for your medicine" and when i finally got of the prednisone the doctor said it should wear of in about four days. and my doctor told me to drink plenty of water. that will speed the process of getting ride of the prednisone in you. i hope this information helps you."

I WANT TO STOP TAKE PREDNISONE AFTER TAKEN IT FOR 2 DAYS 50MG A DAY? for a skin rash

O U812 replied: "call ur doc, don't just quit cold, bad, bad bad, must be reduced gradually over a period of time"

VVK replied: "Not to stop taking prednisone suddenly. The dose of prednisone must be tapered gradually to allow the adrenal glands, which have atrophied, time to recover. Otherwise, the you could put your self in jeopardy of entering into adrenal crisis (e.g., nausea, vomiting,).Don's stop it immediately, take 25mg for next 2 days, then 10 mg for 1 day then stop."

cowboydoc replied: "Prednisone is just a steroids, you can stop it anytime you like. I and my daughter, my grandkids all are on this drug from time to time and we all take it when necessary. I have never heard of a weaning period for prednisone."

Seroquel and Prednisone taken together? What effects would they both have? It's 50mg of Prednisone and only 25mg of seroquel. I'm not sure if I should take them together?! Thanks to everyone who can help me. :)

Dr tracy is here to help!! replied: "Here is the best that i could do with this answer. I don't know what will happen if you take the two together. however i do know by experience that prednisone, solumedrol, or any other steroid significantly affects bi- polar disorder. Steroids can make your moods fluctuate very quickly and can sometimes lead to hospitilization. If you are taking steroids and are bi polar be aware that the steroids will play havoc with your emotions. Answer Just to clarify, Seroquel is not in the antidepressant category of drugs but rather in the "atypical antipsychotic" category. However, it is FDA approved for treatment of depression in Bipolar 1 Disorder. It is also approved for acute mania in Bipolar 1 Disorder. It is currently the only drug in its class approved for both, and it is approved either as monotherapy or as an adjunct to Lithium or Valproate (e.g. Depakote.) It is often prescribed off label in low to moderate doses for insomnia. I know people who take 100-200mg nightly for insomnia. Also, there are current studies taking place that may result in its approval for anxiety, as an alternative to benzodiazepines. Seroquel is not habit forming like the benzos, yet yields much of the same effects in low doses. Depakote, like Seroquel, will give your liver a good workout so DO NOT drink while on either of these medications. Generally, its safe to say don't drink on any psycotropic drugs. These particular two medications cause the liver to metabolize alcohol more slowly, thus increasing the effect of alcohol. If you want to know all the information, more than what the Dr. and Pharmacist will tell you, just got to Seroquel.com and Depakote.com. Complete info and prescribing information is available. I take 400mg Seroquel, 2000mg Depakote, 10-20mg Valium at night. I also take 150mg Zoloft in the a.m. I have Bipolar I Disorder "

What to do if a doctor or pharmacist will not listen about the side effects of prednisone? I posted a question a few days ago about prednisone, and the Response in general was talk to the doctor. Since then the situation with my husband who is on 50mg of prednisone for ulcerative colitis has gotten worse, he is on this for 10 days and then starts decreasing by one tablet per week until he is off it (so about the end of February). I pretty much begged and pleaed that he not go on this meds because he already has anger issues and tends to suffer from depression. He has gone to parenting groups anger management etc. and was doing well for about a year and half now. But that is all gone now and I feel like I am back to square one. Either he is yelling and screaming or will not talk at all (great this close to Christmas hey?). He is not eating right, sits in our room all day or goes outside in a fit of temper and shovels the driveway when the blower is sitting in the shed. He will not talk to the kids at all. I don't know if I should have his mother here for Christmas as his behaviour will scare the crap out of her because she was in two pass abusive relationships, so if he even raises his voice she cringes. Yesterday in a fit of temper he throw out our wedding album and ripped up our marriage certificate. He has moved all his belongs up beside the bed in a huge mound because he says its not his home any how he just pays rent to be here. Has accused me of acting more like a wife to our son then to him. Will not eat what I make and is surviving on weiners and sandwiches oh and pop and pretzels. The family doc says bear with it the er doc says bear with it as does the pharmist. But we are not made out of metal, the kids or I. I have tried not talking to him and giving him space, but then he comes to find me to yell at me. The kids are angery and confused as to what he is doing, I have explained it but they dont understand and think this a choice he is making. He mentioned he has nothing and may as well kill himself, I called the clinic they say oh just a side effect, he will get better as the dose decreases. Its to bad the medical profession is so high and mighty they can't listen to what I was telling them and have been telling them. Any ideas or suggestions on how to cope and how I can stop walking around crying. I try to be brave and take it but man it hurts and hurts alot. I told him I am hurting and he tells me I look fine. Sorry for going on and on but I think I need some advice and some place to vent. Thanks for any responces. Yes he is on asacol and entocourt as well as the prednisone, as I said he was responding well to the 5 asa or asacol so why in heavens name he has to be on all 3 I have no idea.

Mary replied: "Have you talked to a psychiatrist. Maybe they need to add a drug to deal with the side effect of prednisone. You have to be tapered off of prednisone. It is a slow process. On the other hand you should not have to deal with the side effects. He may need counseling as well. Best wishes."

Sally P replied: "aww love it sounds like you are having a terrible time. sorry to say but it would be very dangerous for your husband to stop his medication suddenly. but it sounds to me like he might have developed depression at the moment, and it may be that this won't go away once he is off medication. I think he needs to see a psychiatrist."

larry h replied: "if you feel afraid than call 911 and let the docs at the hospital deal with him ,, he will get better and understand why you did what you did"

Mariel replied: "the reason they are 'not listening' is that though the prednisone may cause a little irritability, that is not the main issue. your husband is probably just using this as an excuse to revert back to his misbehaving self. don't let him get away with it. you must not accept this behavior and blame the meds. he does have a choice in how he treats you. the dr might be able to prescribe him something to calm him down, but the problem seems much deeper. he must shape up or ship out, in my opinion. don't allow him to subject you, your kids or his mother to that kind of abuse. you deserve better. i am not without compassion for your husband but he's in serious need of professional help, perhaps even inpatient. you do him no service to allow him to behave this way. be strong and may God help and bless you."

kiwihelen70 replied: "Get him to a gastroenterologist. Prednisolone is not the only choice of meds for UC...there are others and your doctors are not being holistic in their management of him"

Anama replied: "Did a GI put him on Pred. w/o trying other meds like asacol or colozol first? There are other options for treating Crohn's. If having severe active disease, entocort (also a steroid, but on small rate of whole body absorption) may have been a better choice considering his issues. Go here for more information: Warning though, the meds cost a LOT. Personally, I'd move to your mom's for the duration of the treatment if they won't change the meds, since I can not imagine who is going to take him in with him acting like that. I really feel for you. You can always call and let the Dr. know his behavior is becoming more bizarre and the statements he is making. If you feel threatened at any time, you are going to have to call the police, even if it is the medication making him act up, it doesn't mean you should tolerate physical abuse. If you do have to call the police, tell them the name of his doctor and have them call his/her office about the situation themselves, there is nothing more you can do. Good luck, what a horrible thing to have happen right before the holidays."

Questions about taking Prednisone? Unfortunately I've developed leg ulcers because of poor circulation in my right leg. I am not diabetic, but have poor circulation in my leg because of previous blood clots. After months of waiting, I've finally seen the specialist today about my leg. He put me on a 3 week dosage of Prednisone starting at 50mg for the first week. I've read some horror stories on here about the side effects. Have you ever taken Prednisone for ulcers? if so, did it help? what kind of side effects am I really looking at having? Thanks for the answers.

frediwhite@verizon.net replied: "Don't know about side effects, as I didn't have any. Only one major precaution: Do not stop taking it until the Doc says to, and follow the rather complex procedure for that, else you can get in trouble."

Jesse replied: "My opinion . . . prednisone and evil steroid."

Ulcerative colitis, coming off prednisone seems to have produced a flare up. Is this normal? My husband was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in October, and its been a roller coaster ride ever since. He is on asacol 1600 mg per day and just finished a round of prednisone starting at 50mg and coming down one pill or 5 mg per week. He finished on Thurday and now (Monday morning) he is running to the washroom ever 20-25 minutes. He is upset, his employer is upset, and I feel I don't know what else to do to help any more. Is it normal for this to happen does any one know? As soon as I can call the doctor or pharmacist when they open I will, but till then can any one give me some piece of mind or perhaps share a similar experience?

Shannon C replied: "sounds like a flare up. he should watch his diet and stress levels. sounds like you are supporting him. It's common for people to have flare ups. Sorry his employer isn't as supportive or understanding. Maybe if they had to go through the same thing as your hubby they would. The doctor may want to see him or will call in meds. In the mean time make certain that your husband isn't passing blood. Sometimes the intestinal lining can become irritated. If this happens go see a doctor asap. Hope he feels better. It may take awhile for his body to adjust to meds. Avoid spicy foods and stress. Good luck."

Brian R replied: "Speaking as someone who also suffers from Ulcerative Colitis, this is a flare up. It sounds like you are very helpful and supportive of him which is great. I am currently in a flare up and know how difficult it can be. At my worst I was running to the bathroom twenty times a day. It takes a toll on your body. It is a vicious cycle because stress can effect it, but the more you go the more stressed out you can become. It is normal that he is going through a flare up. I suggest that he keep a journal of everything he eats and drinks for a month. By seeing what foods bother him, he can avoid those as much as possible. Everyone is different. I know that spicy foods, foods with thick cheese, and chocolate bother me so I try to limit it. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to e-mail me. I know how difficult it can be and will give you as much information as I can. Hopefully his flare will end shortly. Brian"

Did short course prednisone make YOU agro? My partner takes it very occassionally ( 1-2 times a year) for his resperatory illness. 50mg usually for 3-7 days. After 3 days he starts getting very grumpy and negative & agro & grouchy. I hate it when he takes it - & he knows it makes him agro and he hates taking it too because of that but we have to persivere for his healths sake. Does anyone else find it affects them this way ? I have heard it does affect men worse because of the levels of testosterone in the body........

suthyrngrl replied: "I've taken prednisone for my bronchitis and so has a male co worker for chrohns disease. We both experienced moodiness and even increased hunger. Its just the side effects. Short-Term Prednisone Side Effects Short-term side effects of prednisone may include: Stomach irritation Headaches Insomnia (see Prednisone and Insomnia) Mood changes (including irritability or aggression)."

Wulfie replied: "Prednisone is a powerfull anabolic steriod. It was actually the first one discovered. Taking it causes all kinds of weird side effects. When I was on it, I ate 2 large pizzas and was still hungry, I looked around for trees to pull out of the ground, and couldn't sleep for a week. It was a nightmare. I also gained about 30 lbs."

Forgot to take my Prednisone today..now what? I'm on Prednisone for cluster headaches. Today would be the 7th day on them at 50mg/day but I forgot to take them. Should I resume as usual in the morning? Please don't tell me to call my doctor, if they were open right now I would.

Mleigh23 replied: "If it were me I would take them. 50mg is a pretty high dose and its not good to abruptly stop taking prednisone, esp at high doses like that... The only thing is if you take the dose this late at night it might cause insomnia. It depends, for me personally prednisone gives me a huge burst of energy. I think the best person to call is the pharmacy. I dont know where you live but CVS and walgreens are usually open 24 hours around here and I have called the pharmacist before about specific prednisone questions. They would be the best person to tell you if missing a dose that high will cause any major problems...Good Luck - feel better!"

Sara C. B replied: "I would say take it tomorrow per usual. You could call the hospital Emergency room and ask them. Actually you could still take it tonight and just take it later tomorrow (When you could call your Dr.)"

bay bay replied: "you can take it in the morning it will be fine. you know that medicine will make you gain weight."

happysurferuk replied: "how did you get on honey? and what did you do if you nnedd help why dont you contact the web based support group. link below there always someone who knows and wont sleep to stop their head hurting them. tc"
