What are the entire listed uses for the anti-viral drug Acyclovir.? I found a bottle of it in my parents bathroom cabinet when I went looking for band-aids. It's dated 9-7-07 and also listed with "no refills", and I can't for the life of me figure out why on earth they would have it.

Jenaveive Jae replied: "Acyclovir is an antiviral drug, a synthetic nucleoside analogue, that is active against the herpes viruses, including herpes simplex 1 and 2 (cold sores and genital herpes), varicella-zoster (shingles and chickenpox), and Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis). Could be any of these, shingles is probably most common in parents, unless you have reason to believe one of them recently contracted herpes. It could be just for cold sores too though! Plus-if the bottle says no refill then it's more than likely treating either the shingles or mono virus."

Is there a over the counter drug that is simular or just like acyclovir? Even close to it.

Poetess_4U replied: "You can try all natural Lysine-it comes in a tube like lip balm or in a pill form. You can get it from a drugstore like Wal-Greens or Sav-on. Personally, I like the pill form because it works from the inside out. You start taking it as soon as you feel a tingle about 3 times a day. You should also take vitamin E, vitamin A and D at the same time and drink lots of water. The whole regiman taken together will drive that little problem away real quick! Its a lot cheaper than the acyclovir and to me, this works better anyway. Good Luck to you, I hope this has helped."

Rachel☺ replied: "I agree with top poster. LLysine 500mg 2x day I also just recently read about something called DSMO, it is applied directly to the area of interest, and you can find this at Health food stores. Good luck ."

Alli replied: "Acyclovir is available with a prescription under the brand name Zovirax. There is also a similar drug like valacyclovir (Valtrex). Both of these you need a prescription for. By any chance are you asking this for treating herpes? This is usually what herpes is treated with. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) can all be used to treat herpes. There is even a topical (cream) form of acyclovir. All of these medications you need a prescription for though."

mnvikes8484 replied: "there is nothing nearly as good to it over the counter"

Does Acyclovir really help cold sores? And can the drug be harmful to your body in the longrun? I have recentaly suspected I have HSV-1 orally. I just had an outbreak 3 weeks ago, which lasted 2 weeks. I was cold sore free for about a week, then all the sudden more popped up on my lips! Im not someone who likes to take perscription drugs, I like to keep it natural. However Ive become desperate, and feel taking Acyclovir is my only chance at living a normal life. Ive tried taking lysine, zinc, vit.C and using abreva....and still no luck!

treponema79 replied: "acyclovir is pretty good at staving off herpes. all medications have risks of side effects, but i think acyclovir risks are pretty low. lemon balm works pretty well at reducing already present cold sores, but acyclovir is your best bet for preventing them to begin with... good luck and if it doesnt work, ask your doc about some of the other antivirals."

what would be drug of choice in a pregnant woman with herpes zoster infection? can acyclovir be given to a pregnant lady if she is suffering from herpes zoster if not then which other alternative drug be given to her? if possible tell the dose too.

MamaSmurf replied: "Please talk to a doctor about it. You are talking about giving an unborn child drugs you don't even about. Just because a drug is ok on the mother, it can still be dangerous to the fetus."

mayflower25 replied: "I am sure valtrex is safe, because I know that it is given to women in the later stages of pregnancy to prevent them transmitting their genital herpes infection to the baby during the birth. Valtrex is used to treat both shingles and genital/oral herpes, all of which are herpes viruses. I don't know the dose though."

Why would someone have a perscription to Acyclovir 200mg 35 pills 3 refills? I've done my research on this drug and am wondering if there is any other reason that someone would be perscribed this drug in 200mg doses 35 pill, and 3 refills at a time, other than herpes? I found a perscription in my little sisters new live in boyfriend stuff while helping them move. Just trying to not jump to any conclusions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

winkcat replied: "it's for all kinds of herpes including chicken pox, herpes cold sores of the lip, genital herpes."

taximomuv3 replied: "Why would you need to jump to any conclusions?? Your sister is an adult (I'm assuming, since she is living with her boyfriend) and this is their business - not yours. If you're thinking of telling her what you "found" ((cough cough)) then don't - you're putting your nose where it doesn't belong and it won't be appreciated."

LaDii LoVe replied: "I get That prescription for cold sores and they give me refills so that i dont have to go to the doctor everytime i get a cold sore"

jharpe21 replied: "first off, i dont agree with the fact that you went through the guys personal things and looked at his prescription, but you are be a protective older brother and just concerned about your lil sister. as the person above stated, this drug is not only to treat the different kinds of herpes, but similar conditions like the chicken pox and shingles. the dosing may seem like a lot to you, well ok come on, lol 35 pills/3refills for 1 month. but, just like how every person is different, everyone has a different dosing to them and if they have a condition, like herepes, where it can reoccur at different times, its understandable to have the amount prescribed. for example, someone who has herpes zoster ophthalmicus- they could be taking 800mg up to 5x/day. but, for someone with gential/ mucocutaneous HSV- takes 400mg 3x/day for the first week (or the first severe episode). if its reoccuring within the same month, their dose would then be 400mg 5x/day. so for some days, he might be taking 3 a day, and other days 5 or 6. but its a good question!!"
