Is accutane gel (.05%) the same as retin-a gel? I have heard the effects of accutane are permanent. Is this the same as retin-a gel and are the effects of retin-a permanent? I've seen accutane gel advertised under the name "Isotrex".

mrgumpy replied: "Retin-a contains retinoin. Accutane and Isotrex contain isotretinoin. Both retinoin and isotretinoin are synthetic derivatives of Vitamin A. In some people a single course of treatment produces a permanent improvement in their skin. For others, further treatment may be required. Talk to a dermatologist before using the gel, as it can have significant side effects."

accutane to atralin gel? my doctor prescribed me on accutane, which i took for 5 monthes and it cleared my skin, then he prescribed me to use atralin gel about twice a week, and now my skin is starting to breakout! should i keep using it or stop using it? i dont know what i should do and i spent so much time on accutane, i would hate for it to be for nothing

Pənny Proud replied: "The ingredients could be irritating your skin. That Atralin Gel is full of parabens :( * PARABENS – Such as methyl- propyl- butyl- & ethyl- parabens: Widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic industry (including moisturizers). An estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products contain parabens. Studies implicate their connection with cancer. They have hormone-disrupting qualities – mimicking estrogen – and interfere with the body’s endocrine system. I really hope that Accutane didn't mess you up! There is a class action lawsuit going on against them right now because the drug causes Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease & Colitis!"

Luis replied: "i say stop using it and ask your dermatologist to prescribe you more accutane or to prescribe you Aczone Dapsone gel 5% Im on accutane im finishing my 3 month in 5 days im going for my 4th im on 100mg cause im a really big guy GOOD LUCK"

Sam replied: "Accutane is prescribed for severe acne. Atralin is prescribed for mild to moderate acne. It doesn't follow that Atralin would be used as maintenance therapy for Accutane. Ask another dermatologist."

Accutane( burning face) + Aloe Vera Gel ( for sunburns ) = ? HELP? I'm on accutane and my face is burning like hell . i think its because im not soposed to use any other medicated things on my face and i used a medicated apricot scrub the past week . my question is , where my face is burning and red could i use aloe vera gel on my face to relive? it ( its that green? stuff that helps sunburns ) thanks

liopulelehua replied: "wow. i don't think you're supposed to use scrubs when using medications for acne. i can imagine how much your face would burn or be dried out. stop using the scrub and try a moisturizing wash. i'm not sure if aloe would work. maybe if you had the actual plant and were using the gel from it. i don't think i would put all those chemicals for a sunburn on my face unless it was meant for faces. hope i helped! (does accutane really work? and how long have you been on it?)"

taterschmidt replied: "I would get in with a dermatologist immediately. Aloe might help temporarily. Also, you may want to go the drugstore and ask for silver nitrate. It's really good for burns. Also, while you are there , the pharmacist should be able to answer any questions re: accutane such as possible drug-interactions and side effects."

Marna S replied: "I would use the aloe vera gel, but put it in the fridge for a cooling affect on your face."

Cris replied: "i recommand NYALOE. just vist NYALOE site."

here, not at all replied: "im glad you reported my answer and i hope you do it agen cos this isnt the account i normally use. im a top contibutor on my other account in the skin, pregnancy and hair section so you might want to take some of my advice. just stop with picking me as best answer and get a life you obviously cant see how childish it is. and since you reported my answer, i guess what i said about your mother is true :)"

Ziana Gel while on Accutane? I'm starting off on Accutane today . I wash my face with Cetaphil Daily cleanser, but my Dermatologist prescribed me the Ziana gel before taking Accutane. Should i still use Ziana while on Accutane?

violentfaygalette replied: "I don't think so because i can really over dry your face out, but I would call your dr to ask. I was on Accutane too and it was the only thing i was on."

what acne gel while on accutane or should i at all? im on accutane, week 6 now, and i have been using clindoxyl gel but i think its expred and has lost i ts affect. I use cetaphil face wash and i am starting Emu Oil on my scars. what gel would you recomend or should i even use one? im not worried about dry skin, mines pretty good wasnt sure how to email you, sayd u didnt allow it but the results have been amazing. Cleared up all the bumps on my chin, which was an average of at least 6 a day, its made me less red and its pbb going to work its way to the forhead now. Only side affect has been sore back no dryness tho

J.A. replied: "Brevoxyl. However, be careful and use it on a small part of your face first, you might be allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide."

Princess Cathy replied: "i would recommend the proactive benzoyl perozide gel it does help reduce redness and some acne. how is accutane working for you? i would love it if you send me an email and tell me! thanks"

Fd O replied: "When I used accutane it did take a while for it to be effective, but it was THE most effective thing. I wouldn't worry about spot treating anything. I would stay the course with the accutane and ask your doctor if you feel it isn't giving you the results you want."

accutane + topical cream/ gel medication= bad? i just started taking accutane a week ago for my face. before i started taking it, i was using retin-a and cyndamycin. should i still use the topical stuff to or is all that way to harsh for my skin? they never told me...

anthony h replied: "when in doubt whip the phone out. call the prescriber, or cvs and ask the pharmicist, they are usually open 24 hrs."

DERMATOLOGIST=ACCUTANE= BLEACHING CREAM /GEL? HI, I wanna know if any of you have had a bad acne problem and have visited the dermatologist and if so, what did he/she prescribe for you: for you acne, and acne scars. Did it work? I have a dermatologists appointment in a few days and I need to get some ideas of what he or she may prescribe. I have mild acne, but it is recurrent so my face is never clear of a pimple or acne scars. What is/was your acne like and how was your prescription working? Thanks for answering and you are much appreciated. You acne sufferers know how I feel. Any more insight from anyone, specifically on bleaching creams and gels that the dermatologiist may prescribe for acne scars. My appointment is tomorrow morning.

Jhonathan replied: "ask a good doctor"

TARA! replied: "i dont have ance but my best friend did. she had acne for ever, and she was constantly on face creams and washes that were prescription and nothing worked for her. so she went on accutane, and for the first 4 months it was terrible.. her face was even worse, it broke out and looked like poison ivy, and her face was so dry she couldnt even do her makeup. but after the 6 months, her face was beautiful! it still is. it got rid of ALL of her blackheads and zits and now she barely gets any acne at all! i definiely recommend it to you because it's worth it! but you have to be careful because there are alot of precautions with accutane and you have to make sure you are not sexually active, and if you are that you are constantly using either a condom or are on birth control! good luck! =] * & they definitely will put you on accutane if you have tried everything else and nothing works for you."

Dee replied: "If you have mild acne, I highly doubt Accutane will be prescribed to you. I saw a dermatologist a couple of days ago for the first time. I have somewhat moderate acne. She asked if I want to go on oral medication, I wanted to try topical first. She put me on Sodium Sulfacetamide 10% wash morning and night, and Acanya Gel twice a day. I've used it for three days and I can say my skin's improved about 10%. The gel made my skin somewhat dry so I use, Neutrogena Moisturizer. Good luck, I wish you all the best <3"

What washing routine should i use with Accutane? So i just started taking Accutane yesterday, because after using proactiv for over 2 years, i still continued to get horrible acne. My dermatologist says i don't need to use proactive or anything while taking the accutane, but i really don't want to break out horribly, so i want to use some washing routine. My question is, what should i use to wash my face and back now while on accutane. I also used Duel Topical Gel on my back. Should i still use proactiv in the morning and night? Or should i just use a soap at morning and night. I just need a good washing routine, along with moisturizing routine to use while on proactiv. Currently, for the first 2 days on Accutane, i have stopped using proactiv and have just been washing my face and back with a regular Lever 2000 bar of soap, because i don't know what to do. Please help!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! alright...thanx a lot 4 the replies...so is this an alright routine... morning: with sink, wash face with bar of lever 200 soap (might consider getting Cetaphil or wutever, but im not to sure what to get cause there's so many...does it really matter what soap u use?), then clean my back and chest with pads containing Sylic Acid (is that bad...why is it bad to use sylic acid, i knew about BP, but not SA)... if its bad for me to use that back and chest pad, what pads could i use to wash my back and chest (only in morning cause i just use soap on back and chest at night in shower)? Night: Shower- use lever 2000 soap (again, does it really matter what soap u use, cause if that Cetaphil stuff is better, i'll get that) on face, back, and chest. i havnt started using moisturizer yet, cause my skin isnt dry yet, but when i do, what is the best brand/kind to use, in addition to those already recomended by the previous poster? Should i moisturize morning and night, after washing?

Gem replied: "EXTREMELY mild cleanser like Cetaphil... I hope you've researched EVERYTHING there is to know about Accutane, it's an extremely serious medication. Google the side effects so you know what to look forward to within the next few months... Your skin is GOING TO GET WORSE before it gets better, be prepared."

&l0ve; replied: "Like the other answer said .. you need to be VERY gentle with your face while on Accutane. DO NOT use Proactiv at ALL. That cleanser will do your face more damage than good. Use a VERY mild cleanse like Cetaphil, Clean and Clear or Biore Foaming Face Wash. NOTHING with Benzoyl or Sylic Acid in it. And NOOO exfoliating. With Accutane .. you will get worse before it gets better. You usually get clearer when you are on your final few months. So dont give in and use different products .. you'll just ruin your skin in the long run. If you want to just use soap .. use a soap with Vitamin E or Shea/Cocoa Butter in it. Regular bar soap will dry out your skin even more while on Accutane. has GREAT natural soaps and cleansers. I think you can use Tea Tree while on Accutane to help break outs since its gentle (ask your derm). The Body Shop has a Tea Tree soap that you should use .. along with a moisturizer. So while on Accutane use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Go to For more info on Accutane and some questions. Just keep it simple and let the accutane do its job. You'll have clearer skin in months! Hope that helps! EDIT: It really doesnt matter what bar soap you use. For most people bar soap is too drying .. plus it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. But if you want to use soap, I still say go for something natural or Cetaphil. The sylic acid should be fine on your back. Just watch to make sure its not too drying. If it is, stop using it. Sounds like a good routine! Keep it up!"
