As an Acupuncturist and doctor of Chinese Medicine, I will often prescribe an herbal formula for a patient (mainly in a tea decoction form as this is usually the stongest) based on their own unique presentation of symptoms, as well as incorporate specific acupuncture points that help the body kick out the illness. Patients should be dilligent about taking the herbs and following recommendations as well as staying in contact with their doctor to make sure the illness is not getting worse, as this could lead to more serious complications."
Clindamycin and strep throat? Usually when I got strep throat my doctor would prescribe Amoxicillin and I would feel better over night. This time my doctor prescribed Clindamycin for my strep throat. I started taking it yesterday and I still feel about the same. Does it take longer for Clindamycin to kill strep than it does for Amoxicillin?
He did not do a culture this time, just said it looked like strep. It feels exactly the same to me as every other time I have had strep. Any ideas what kind of virus it could be if it's not bacterial?
Jennifer V replied: "Different antibiotics are better at killing different bacteria.
If you are not feeling noticably better 24 hours after taking an antibiotic, you should call your doc.
Clindamycin is sometimes prescribed for people who are allergic to Ammoxicillin. Are you allergic? Have you broken out in hives from a previous dose of Amox?
Also, if your doc didn't culture your throat, but went on "look" alone, you might not even have a bacterial infection, in which case any antibiotic at all is going to be ineffective.
Talk to your doc.
Hope you are feeling better soon. :)
Many regular "cold viruses" (picornaviruses - including rhinoviruses - or coronaviruses) cause draining in the back of your throat that can irritate the delicate tissue. Even if your nose isn't stuffy or runny, you can still have the drainage in back. And because different cold viruses have different symptoms (and they frequently mutate, so can change symptoms) some even affect the throat specifically, causing inflamation, swelling (swollen tonsils, glands) and iritation. The throat will look like strep - red, swollen and possibly with white spots - and feel like strep - with extreme painfulness - but not actually *be* strep.
If the sore throat is viral, no amount of antibiotics will help it - they are useful only to kill bacteria (like strep or staph), but not any viruses.
I have had sore throats that I swore were strep, only to get both rapid and regular cultures back negative. But it's worth testing every time a sore throat produces a fever, because left untreated, strep can travel to other organs such as your kidneys, your heart (rhematic fever) or your skin (scarlett fever), which can be very serious and painful.
Have your doc culture your throat. If it comes back negative, stop taking the antibiotics. If it doesn't clear up in 5-7 days (typical "cold" sore throat recovery time) you should have it looked at again to rule out other potential infections (like fungal, which are also painful and can cause white spots - but are also not properly treated with antibiotics)
In the mean time, I find throat numbing sprays to be fairly effective, as is gargling with very salty water. You may find Ibuprofin to be a more effective pain reliever than Tylenol.
Get well soon! :)"
bactiman63 replied: "Its strange that your doctor prescribed Clindamycin to treat streptococcal phayngitis ( a penicillin like amoxicillin is the drug of choice unless allergic). That antibiotic is not even a alternative treament for strep throat. The majority of cases of pharyngitis is caused by viruses (Epstein Barr being the most common). The symptoms between viral and bacterial pharyngitis is very similar and a rapid strep test and /or a culture would be necessary to rule it out."
My son was in the hospital for infected lymph nodes for undetected strep.? He was put on an I.V and given Clindamycin 3 times a day. Right before his midnight dose his I.V blew and instead of restarting a new one the nurse gave my son an intramuscular shot of Clindamycin. My son could not walk for 2 days. Is this medicine ok to be given IM?
ScorpioRising75 replied: "Yes, clindamycin is available in IM form. I would expect soreness at the injection site, especially if he flinched during the injection. It's not pleasant but it needs to be done sometimes :(
I don't know all of the variables that went into the decision to give this IM. But I will say that when dealing with a tough infection, it's important that the antibiotics are given precisely on time, with very little variation. You need a constant level of the antibiotic in your bloodstream, and you're trying to avoid having highs and lows of it in your system. It sounds like the nurse decided to give that injection rather than risk being too late on the dose."
Joanne replied: "Yes, clindamycin can be given safely IM. The pain from the injection does occur at times and should go away"
Strep????????? I have had strep for almost 2 months. First time they thought it was Scarlatina and gave me penicillins for 10 days. I got 100% better but still had swollen lymph nodes. (right side) About 48 hrs after I got off penicillin I got sick again. Second time, it was less severe and they gave me clarithromycin for 10 days. I got 100% better but still had swollen lymph nodes. About 24 hrs after I got off clarithromycin I got sick again. This time they gave me clindamycin. I've gotten progressivly less sick, but 30 days on antibiotics feel very silly to me. It's my Group A Strep, I use new tooth brush everytime I brush my teeth, I gargle with salt water about three times a day, I take vitamin pills. What is wrong with me????????
I got tested three times and they all cameback positive, I took all antibiotics as prescribed like a good little girl
reneem1954_2000 replied: "Sometimes it takes a good while to get rid of strep throat. I had it so much when I was 10 that I finally became allergic to pencillen. That is all they had back then. Strep is sometimes just hard to get rid of."
jsdolleyxox replied: "Although your case is unlikely, it can take a good while to fully get rid of strep throat. If you have a gut-feeling something is wrong, more than just strep, I would go talk to your doctor. There isn't very much you can do, though, if it's just strep. I wish you the best & get well soon!"
Brandon replied: "It is very clear the the drugs you are currently taking ( antibiotics ) ar not working. call your doc and ask if it could be viral. There is a test that they can do to find out. also take over the counter meds. they relieve symtoms."
Ampicillin and Clindamycin used in labor and delivery? Are these both indicated for Group B strep, or is that just the clindamycin? I know ampicillin is used as a prophylactic for C-section infections, but what about vaginal delivery?
Nurse Susan replied: "Ampicillin is used as a prophalactic antibiotic for women who test positive for group B strep, for vaginal or Csection deliveries.
Gentamycin is used for those who are allergic to penicillins.."
How long are you contagious with strep? I got strep on the 16th I believe.. since then I've been taking my medicines as prescribed. Now I don't have any more medicine to take besides Clindamycin ever 6 hours.
It's the 28th now..
And I want to be able to kiss my boyfriend and not worry about him getting anything..
=/
Karen N replied: "As long as you no longer have a fever, you can kiss him all you want"

fifi replied: "probably need to eat first"
cupcake_girl@sbcglobal.net replied: "May its becasue your not drinking enough water with the pill. Try drinking water before you take the pill that will prevent it from sticking to your stomach then when you take the pill drink more water with it. hope that helps."
gymfreak replied: "Are you taking them on an empty stomach? Try taking them with food. I get the same thing when I take medication on an empty stomach unless it is directed."
Strawberry P replied: "Heartburn is a side effect of Clindamycin, can cause increase in gastric juice and can also irritate stomach lining. Try taking with food, followed by glass of water, should follow each dose of Clindamycin with glass of water, for it's secreted primarily by the kidneys. If heartburn increases or if you have a bloody stool, contact your doctor immediately."
