I've had many addictions to drugs in the past but so far Effexor Xr has been the hardest ever. Anyone agree? I was addicted to nicotine for 10 years and cocaine for 2 years and drinking for many years as well as weed for many years. I quit them all cold turkey, not at the same time - all different times successfully but so far Effexor was the WORST withdrawal I ever had. Tell me your stories. I wouldn't take it again for anything.

Kevin replied: "Effexor is one of the hardest drugs to overcome. Lukily, there are some places that can help. All the best, Kevin"

Should I expect the same side effects from Prozac as I had with Effexor XR? I tried Effexor XR 75mg last year and it was a very bad experience. I had many side effects: constipation, fatigue, dizziness, sleepy all day long and you can say I was not functional. Anyway, I will start Prozac 20mg tomorrow and I wonder if I will have the same side effects or not. I heard that Prozac is not the same drug class as Effexor XR.

Candy replied: "You won't have the same side effects but you will have side effects."

the drug effexor xr and lorazapam? effexor...has anyone takem it before? whats it for? have u had bad or good experiences with it? can u drink on it if you dont take your dose that day? has anyone taken ativans before? do they work? come on people..tell me what u know.

candyblpn replied: "No I would not drink and take Ativan! You can take both without any problem if you are not allergic to them. I would take the Ativan and break in in half and take the half pill at home no driving or anything until you know how your body will respond to the new medication. :D"

Nissee replied: "Effexor is for depression. and lorazepam is a benzoediazepan another word for it may be an anti-depressent pill or for anxiety. I would drink taking these pills it could be dangerous for your health."

Rockinjellyfish replied: "I just got home from the hospital this morning, I had a grand mal seizure last night. 2mg adivan, 75mg olanzapine and 1ounce of gin. Not an overdose, just my particular way of reacting to that dose of meds. talk to doctor and find out interactions, better yet talk to pharmacist they know more about drugs. email me if you want more info, I have bp and know many meds intimately."

I have "FIVE" days and I will be completely off Effexor XR. Somebody out there talk to me!!!? I started weining myself off the very mean drug "EFFEXOR XR" back on June 10, and on July 17 I will take my last 37.5 tablet. My doctor gave me some Lamatical for mood swings, but I broke out in a very bad rash and was able to take only 4 pills. I have been thru hearing people talking in my bedroom, but no-one was there. I sometimes wake up at 4:30AM crying hysterically and just simply scared to death. I live alone. My medical doctor gave me Ativan, which has helped me thru so much of this. Today, my sister took me to the doctor and we were sitting in the waiting room, and SUDDENLY I starting crying because I did not know where I was or the day, date or time. My very sweet sister has been there for me thru this. There are seconds at times I don't feel alive. I know that makes no sense to someone who has never been thru an EFFEXOR XR withdrawal. I am 59 years old and was on Effexor XR for almost four years. The more I read about the medication .......TALK TO ME OUT THERE!

Marilyn B replied: "Oh, I feel bad for you! My friend who is a nurse warned me about letting a doctor prescribe Effexor for my daughter's chronic headaches. My friend said that she has heard how terribly difficult it is to stop taking this particular drug. I don't know what more to suggest than for you to be closely supervised by your doctor and family as you go off it. Perhaps you could even be hospitalized in a drug rehab program. Best wishes and stay strong. Don't give in and go back on it just so you can stop the horrific withdrawal symptoms."

just me replied: "I went thru HELL when coming off of that medicine. My heart rate doubled and I could literly feel my heart and lungs raddleing in my chestI had the sudden crying spells when coming off of it.. But I was ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy when I came off of it and was put on other medication........"

Sara C. B replied: "Honey, I've been there. Was hooked on "Speed" when I was in my 20's (50 yrs ago). Tell your Dr. what you're going thru. Possibly he can get you into Rehab I don't know the drug you're taking, it must be a real bummer. Good luck. I'll be saying a prayer or two for you."

steve.c_50 replied: "Hopefully I can put this into words...try to go with what you are feeling rather than fighting it, I always did better just relaxing and letting the episode run its course. My doctor prescribed me a tranquilizer (Klonopin) that helped more than anything. I didn't take EFFEXOR, mine was Paxil for 7 years. I about climbed the walls stopping it, but felt better if I did not fight the feelings. This type drug has a long half-life and will take several (like 8) weeks to clear from your system. During that time try to stay relaxed...I know damn well that's easier said than done. Take care."

s1sm00n replied: "I took Effexor for about 3 years, but I didn't have withdrawal symptoms like that. I have now been on Prozac for about 8 years and have had a lot less side effects. When I tapered off the Effexor, I took 4 months to do it, though. I can understand what you are going through, and if it helps, just try to stay calm and focus on your breathing. When you get anxious, try to slow your breathing down. If you can stay focused, it can help to lessen the anxiety (which tends to feed on itself, as you probably know). Also, if I remember correctly I took a dose of 27 mg also, so you may want to check into whether you can ease down another step before you stop entirely. Best of luck to you. I know how hard it can be to find the right medication for long-term management. :)"

oatesmokid replied: "Don't panic this is the hunt test period Phase of these medicaions.they are serious ,but can give u a new lifeon the rite one .Effexor in low doses is great for me.I get tremors that look like siesures a,cant write or speak properly, when I get the wrong one. Being reactive is common with lots of us .U must have a good care phycryitist to give these meds properly.Tried t kill myself on zolof 3 times, climing wall trying to get out of skin with wellbutrin but atavan, zanza, and that family of drugs can work wonders to get u over it.U shoul'nt be coming off the w/o ur doctor. cCall about symtoms and they can help. Some times it's going slowlu onto a new med to cover the symtoms is best way.Don't give up the seargh is worth the quality fo life u can get. Just be a large part of u recovery team and check for unusual syptoms.Don't drink, use herbs or drugs w/ thid type meds.Don't listen to the OMG stories. This is totally an individual thing and u can find the best doc and meds,Just, for u.Talk about how u feel to a good friend or family . It helps put it into persective.Panic attacks can seem like u may die, but talk to ur self and describe whats happening.Research the mental health web sites .Hope and pray for ur recovery soon.Agape love a friend."

yadal replied: "Are you sure you should be taken off this medication? I hear Effexor is a very hard medication to come off of. It's scary as I've been on Effexor for about 4 years now myself. I started at 37.5 mg, but about 2 months ago, it was increased to 50 mg. Unfortunately I am still suffering from anxiety/depression and as of today it was increased to 75 mg as well as taking an additional med."

jrgannapolis replied: "I also weened off of it a few months ago. I had very bad symptoms as well. What I did, in addition to the ativan, was I would open the Effexor capsules when I couldn't take it anymore. I would take a few of the "beads" out and swallow them until eventually I didn't need anymore "beads"."

lisa x replied: "All I can say is, it will get better. Listen to your body. You need lots of sleep, water and rest. I should know, I went cold turkey from 375mg per day of Effexor, just from disgust at what this drug was doing to my body. I am not advocating that in any way, just don't be too harsh on yourself. Give it 3 or 4 weeks of looking after you, if you want to sleep, then do it, don't push yourself. You will come through. It's a horrible drug to withdraw from, but focus on what lies ahead. You just know now to stay away from it. Anyway, good luck and remember, it WILL get better!"

Shari S replied: "I too am in the withdrawal of effexor xr. But, I decided to take matters into my own hands and quit cold turkey. It has been the worst 4 days of my life! I will see my doctor tomorrow. I have been crying for no reason, brain shivers, suicidal thoughts, etc. I have a friend that is my God send - don't know where I'd be right now without him. I have been on effexor xr for 3 months, I'm wondering how much worse I'd be if I had been on it any longer than that, or if time makes a difference. Hang in there!"

What should I do for my sore mouth? I am afraid it's from the side effects of psychotropic drugs like Effexor I have already had 55 ECT (shock treatments.) I had 45 in Sacto a few years ago and they saved my life. Recently I had 10 more at Mayo because my mouth/lip/tongue pain was almost unbearable. The electro-convulsive treatments took away my mouth pain and the depression that came from having such sores in my mouth. Just the other day I had some grapefruit/juice which I know I shouldn't have...and the pain and swelling came back. I am taking my doctor's benedryl/maalox/codeine liquid formula, but I am wondering what other ideas anyone else might have. It affects my speaking, eating and sleeping. I want to nip it in the bud before it gets worse. I fear if I have much more ECT I'll be SO confused and won't have any memory left at all. I was on 8 different psychotropic meds, but am only on Effexor XR and Seroquel. (The reduction chiefly due to the ECT treatments.) (Yes, Effexor is THAT one.) They say it warns on page 36 of the information of homicidal ideation.

applechick282 replied: "I was on effexor for a while... that is some scary stuff. I'm sorry for everything you have been through. I have no advice that you haven't already tried. I'll pray for you. God bless."

Da ben dan replied: "well I take effexor xr and seroquel and i have been for about 3 months...I've had a few side effects but minor compared to yours...see your doctor."

onyxpect replied: "I have to wonder what you do for nutritional support...mouth sores sounds to me so much like a symptom of not enough "stress" nutrition (B vitamins, calcium/magnesium, vitamin C). This sounds like an EXTREMELY stressful situation, so I imagine you would need a great deal of supplements to stay at your best. Mouth sores in situations like this are very common. There is much readjusting and even re-learning involved in where you are at, which would stress anyone. Before I say more I must tell you this: if you do try new supplements then watch carefully how you respond to the drugs you are on...very often the right supplement combination reduces your dosage need for certain drugs. I didn't believe in supplements for many years until someone told me that nature can't put back what modern living takes out of us, and that no animal could adapt to the kinds of stresses and demands of civilization in such a short time, and also that even today's food doesn't have the same nutrition of 100 years ago. For over 20 years I have taken what some friends think is scary amounts of vitamins, minerals and other supplements and while I still have some problems, I am in better shape by far than anyone else in my family at my age. I learned about supplements by reading about 50 books by different authors (there was a lot of bad info. in the 60s and 70s). It's not something you can learn just by reading a book or two but once you start figuring out the right combinations for your own body and lifestyle it is SO worth the time and trouble, even if doctors call me foolish and dangerous. (I will believe my doctor when he looks as healthy at 50 as I do!)"

What happens if you drink alchohol while taking effexor xr? I told my gyno that I've been feeling fatigued and uninteredsted in my favourite activities since the birth of my baby a year ago. She prescribed me 37.5 mg of effexor xr. I like to drink a lot, how will alchohol interact with the drug?

katyzta replied: "This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy or cause blurred vision; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. So, you can still drink, but I'd do it in moderation"

Julie replied: "It makes you a happier drunk. The bottle says not to do it, I know for sure. But try to find any drug that does ot have that on the label. There is no evidence that Effexor and alcohol creat any deadly cocktail if that is your worry. They affect different parts of your body. Alcohol causes more depression so there is one reason to not repeat the episode."

Doctor Chauhan replied: "You will have to choose one of the two - either continue with the alcohol and then some more (which has become a necessity of sorts in your depression), or you may like to follow the advise of your doctor and just take effexor sr for the control of depression. Try getting addicted to your child -spend more time with your child. Spend time in playing, teaching, training and building a strong realtionship with your baby. Take your baby out for excursions, fairs, games and things like that. This will cheer you as well as your baby."

Has anyone taken Effexor XR and felt the effects almost immediately? I just started taking Effexor XR last week. I will take my 5th pill tonight. The first 2 days I really only felt the negative effects of it. Headaches, foggy head, teeth clenching. Day 3 I felt really good. And today I feel really good. Is it to early to feel the effects from it or has anyone else felt a quick response from this drug?

hollydolly1083 replied: "I took it & I had problems because with insomnia but other than that not really any, there's a website that lets you know the side effects & the percentage of people who have had reported it. "

Qtea replied: "I have taken Effexor XR and it was not the medication for me. However, it did help my ex immensely. As for reaction time, there are people who are known as "hyper-reactors", who begin to feel the effects of the medication almost immediately. This is the way I am. When I took Effexor it made me more nuts than I already was, almost immediately, lol. But when I got on the correct medication, I also reacted to it immediately. Work with your good feelings - whether you are a hyper-reactor or you are just plain feeling the effects of finally coming to a resolution from your depression, these are the good times!"

Calif Social Worker replied: "Yes, you can have a positive response within the first week. As your dr. probably told you, it will be around 6 weeks to obtain the full benefit. Effexor can be a great medication for major depression and for treatment-resistant depression, but one word of caution: do not stop taking it abruptly because there can be nasty withdrawal effects depending on your dose and how long you've been on it. When and if you want to stop taking it, talk to your dr. about tapering off of it."

dolphyns2000 replied: "I took it for awhile, and while I didn't feel the effects immediately, I noticed the side effect REAL quick. My sex drive went down the toilet. I was on it for about a year, and if I had stayed on it, my husband and I would not be together. I DID NOT like the way it made me feel or the person it made me. I was snippy, angry, and argumentative. I switched to Wellbutrin and that was better, but I eventually quit taking that too. Different drugs affect everyone differently."

Baby Crazy Hair replied: "The first time I took Prozac I had the same reaction."
