cunfyoozed replied: "I completely DISAGREE with the above post! Unless you have personally experienced the effects of Singulair, you cannot possibly imagine how horrible this medication can be. The FDA is actually continuing its evaluation of Singulair.
My daughter is six years old, and started Singulair for extreme allergies. Within a few days, her disposition completely changed. She became very irritable, aggressive, angry, throwing horrendous tantrums and crying constantly. She started having severe separation anxiety, to the point that we would have to literally drag her into school every day! She also had multiple episodes of nausea every day, and stopped eating. We were starting to consider that she may need therapy.
We called our doctor, and even after explaining her symptoms, he still denied the fact that Singulair could be to blame. Ignoring him, we discontinued the Singulair, and were amazed at how quickly she returned to "normal". We could see a difference in her mood within just a few days. Now, almost two weeks later, she is almost completely back to being herself, with just a few mood swings here and there.
Hang in there, and she will get better! I know how difficult and helpless you feel when there's nothing you can do. Just remember that you made the right decision by taking her off the meds. Her body will soon adjust.
Blessings!"
How long will it take for Singulair to start working/making you feel better if you have asthma? I take Pulmicort twice everyday as a preventative medicne, but my doctor just prescribed Singulair to help as well. It's been 5 days since I started taking Singulair on top of the Pulmicort but I'm still having waves of breathlessness.
How long does it take for Singulair to start working and making you feel better?
Jupiter replied: "My daughter takes singulair, pulmicort, and nasonex. They need to build up in the system before they start working. I saw a difference in her breathing after a few weeks.
The upside is if she forgets her medicine once, it doesn't have a bad effect either. Takes a while to work out of the system.
I'm sorry you're feeling crummy."
CJBig replied: "It took a good month before I noticed any difference in my 3 yr old son. But after that, the Singulair has worked wonders for him. He went from using his nebulizer 2-3 times a day every day to now using it maybe every six months or when he gets a cold."
How long does it take for Singulair to start working? Yeah, how long does it take for Singulair to start working when it is being used for allergic rhinitis? I was prescribed this and
Veramyst, I tried the veramyst, but I got horribly sick. So yeah, how long should it take?
Daughtry-luver replied: "It's probably going to take a few days to get in your system if not a month."
What sort of side effects does Singulair have? I've been on Singulair for about six months, and not long after that, I started to experience gastric problems. I never had these sort of problems before taking Singulair, and I was wondering if maybe that is the cause? What are the general side effects of Singulair?
Spiller replied: "What are the possible side effects of montelukast?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

severe sinus pain, swelling, or irritation; or
worsening asthma symptoms.
Less serious side effects may include:
upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea;
mouth pain;
tired feeling;
dizziness, headache;
sore throat, cough, hoarseness; or
stuffy nose.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.
What other drugs will affect montelukast?
Before using montelukast, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton); or
rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane).
This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with montelukast. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor."
Can you tell me your experience with Singulair? My daughter is 14. She has exercise induced asthema. The doctor put her on Singulair, however, she's starting PE at school tomorrow and I'm concerned about whether this medication is going to help her or not. She couldn't make the basketball team this year because of her asthema. One lap around the field running and she starts having breathing problems and heart palpatations. This medication is new for her. She has been on it for 5 days. I don't know how long it takes to work but I know she has to start running tomorrow in her PE class. I did speak to her teacher, so he's aware but that doesn't always mean anything. If you have this problem and use this medication can you please share how it's worked or not worked for you? Thank you!
she did PE and had an attack, it was less than her others. She stopped quicker when she felt it coming on though. I think that has to help. Today she's going to try again. Does this medication take time to build up?
bubbles replied: "It was okay no big"
David Trust replied: "Maybe Cingular. But I dunno what Singular is."

AFI fan on fire replied: "like the phone company? srry i didnt read the lllllllllooooooonnnnnngggggggg book u wrote up there"
tman replied: "I've taken it for several years and it helps relieve the onset of problems , I've been to pulmonary rehabilitation and they recommend the use of a fast acting inhaler like albuterol before exercise , this would be a good idea for your daughter if she has one available. Just have her use it right before her PE class. ."
sweetysource replied: "I had my son on singulair and after I read the possible side effects I decided to try and find something else. It did seem to work well but the side effects worried me. Its really a personal decision and Im sure that your daughter will tell you if she feels breathless or if it is helping her. google singulair and side effects for more info."
Sally G replied: "WELL MY DAUGHTER AND MYSELF, BOTH HAVE ASTHMA
AND WE ALSO TAKE SINGULAR AS WELL AS ADVAIR WITH
OUR ALBUREROL (AS NEEDED). AS FOR SINGULAR IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR BOTH OF US AND WE BEEN TAKING THIS MEDICATION FOR 2 YEARS NOW. MY DAUGHTER PLAYS SOCCER AND SOMETIMES SHE DOES
NOT TAKE HER MEDICATION, BUT SHE DOES TAKE 2 PUFFS OF HER ALBUREROL BEFORE PLAYING. AS LONG AS SHE IS TAKING HER MEDICATION SHE WILL BE OKAY.
MY DAUGHTER DOESN'T WANT TO TAKE HER MEDICATION
AND I HAVE TO REMIND HER TO TAKE IT OR SHE CAN HAVE
AN ASTHMA ATTACK AND THAT SHE DOES NOT WANT THAT. SO GIVE THE MEDICATION TO KICK IN TO HER SYSTEM AND EVERYTHING SHOULD BE FINE."
CuriousC replied: "I was just put on Singulair about 2 weeks ago and I'm finally starting to feel better. I think it takes a while for it to be absorbed into your system. I was still having frequent attacks a week into the medicine. I would tell your daughter to take her Albuterol before PE. I always take it before I exercise and it seems to help a little..."
shamaas10 replied: "IT IS GREAT FOR ASTHMA. I HAVE IT. WHEN I TAKE IT I FEEL COMPLETELY CURED. I DON'T EVEN COUGH OR HAVE SHORT BREATHING. WHEN I FORGET TO TAKE IT I COUGH ALL NIGHT. THE TASTE IS ALSO PRETTY GOOD."
preacher7003 replied: "singular is used for long term prevention of asthma. it reduces the swelling and inflammation that tends to close up the airway, and relaxes the walls of the bronchial tubes, expanding the airways, and permitting moreair to pass through, BUT it wont stop, an acute asthma attack. for that u need a fast acting, orally inhaled airway opener such as, alupent or proventil. singular ISNT a complete replacement for such drugs. so if ur daughters asthma gets worse after exercise, she will, need to continue using a short acting inhaled airway opener, to prevent and relieve attacks. i hope this helps . ill be praying for her. god bless"
Dawn W replied: "Singulair worked wonderfully for me, but I would giveit more than 5 days before she can actually do a lot more. I hope this helps her, I grew up with asthma and know how hard it can be."
sdexcalibur replied: "It takes atleast 2 weeks to fully start working so dont be surprised if you dont notice a difference yet. That stuff gave my son a horrible side affect that is why i stopped. Very aggressive behavior totally different child but then again my son is 6.. So we will be trying somthing different. Hope this helps and good luck"
What is the difference between prevention and long-term management of asthma? My doctor prescribed me "Singulair" to take as a preventative for my asthma. My co-worker insists that the term long-term management of asthma, which is what Singulair says it's used for, is not the same as prevention of asthma. She says it is only good for allergies and exercise-induced asthma. Isn't long-term management another way of saying prevention?!??
Person replied: "i would have thought that prevention was stopping the asthma all together and long-term management was just making sure it isn't a huge issue for your whole life"
Unbelieved replied: "First you must know the cause of asthma and then you can prevent it.Your co worker is right, if you have to take ongoing meds to control asthma it is managing the disease. Your doctor meant by preventative that it can prevent attacks from starting or minimize them. There is; however, a way to stop it altogether and it is easy. I had asthma and spring time pollen allergies for 42 years and now none for 12 years. I took courses on pure water versus tap water to advance my herbal knowledge and was told to use pure bottled water and a shower filter just to see if the teaching was right. It worked beyond my wildest dreams. As soon as I stopped using chlorine in any way I started to have my lungs clear up. Within three weeks I had no more plugged lungs and both problems gone. This is a true preventative. For the rest of your life avoid chlorine like the plague and you problems should be gone soon. By the way distilled water is best ro water is ok. Good Luck. H."
