How long do adverse CNS reactions to ibuprofen last after the last dose? I've been having dizziness, ringing in the ears and visual 'shakiness' for about a week and a half - after taking the max ibuprofen dose for several days to combat the pain from a sinus infection. It's been at least 4 days since my last dose of advil, but I'm getting worried about the dizziness...

rnrayunretired replied: "The half life of ibuprofen is about 2 hours, so after 4 days you should not be experiencing these side effects. Since you said you have a sinus infection, it is very possible you also have a otitis media (middle ear infection) which can cause the dizziness and tinnitus (ear ringing) you are experiencing. The visual shakiness is called nystagmus and is common when large amounts of ibuprofen have been ingested. It should, however, be gone by now. Drink plenty of water and go see your MD if it doesn't clear up soon."

How long can I safely take the max dose of ibuprofen daily? Skip to the bottom if you don't want to read the back ground story: I have some injuries (bad shin splints that turned to stress fractures 2 years ago, torn cartilage in shoulder) that will often flare up whenever I exercise. A heavy dose of Ibuprofen is really the only thing that keeps these injuries at bay. Ideally, I would rest. However, I can't-- I'm in ROTC and have to go to LDAC (a very important summer training thing where we're evaluated). So, I have to stay in shape, and I also don't want go on profile (excused from physical training due to injury) and have this on my record. We run and do pushups every day, so I can't really rest. I've heard a lot of stories about people getting holes in their stomach and such, and it's starting to worry me. My question, how long can I safely take the maximum daily dose of ibuprofen (3200 mg)?

demanding replied: "NSAID's (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) should NOT be taken over a long period of time without consulting your Doctor. Your Doctor may be able to prescribe you a longer lasting painkiller which can be taken twice daily as opposed to taking a high dose of Ibuprofen 4 times a day. NSAIDs can cause serious gastrointestinal problems for some including stomach ulcers, inflammation of the small intestine. Whilst you make an appointment to see Your Doctor make sure never to take them on an empty stomach. A slice of toast, cracker, even a packet of crisps will be enough. - Try timing them around breakfast, lunch etc. Good news is tho - a recent study found those taking ibuprofen over a long period were less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease later in life lol"

Ive accidently exceeded the max. 24 hr dose for ibuprofen, what will happen? I didnt realise it was six, i think ive taken ten since y.day! And im very little!

keltillos replied: "You probably have nothing to worry about. If it was accidental, you are mostlikely still within the safety margin. Drink lots of water, eat some bread or something, and don't worry about it. Were you to make a habit of this, or vastly exceed the daily dose, you could look forward to liver and kidney damage, which, given time, will ruin the rest of your life (or cancel it entirely)."

BeetleMama replied: "I did that before, I assumed it was every four hours but it was every six. I expect you'll be just fine too, I'm still here. Just hit yourself in the head and repeat six six six until you remember, lol"

Martin B replied: "You should see tomorrow morning.."

Donna A replied: "How much ibuprofen was in each pill? In prescription strength, one pill equals up to four non-prescription pills. If you took ten over-the-counter ibuprofen pills, then you gave yourself a prescription-level dose. That is probably not a problem if you only do it once. According to the site below, "When under the care of a physician, the maximum dose of ibuprofen is 3.2 g daily. Otherwise, the maximum dose is 1.2 g daily." There are 200 mg in one over-the-counter tablet, so ten pills would be 2 g. That's over the non-prescription limit, but well under the prescription maximum."

Stacey-Marie J replied: "Nothing, i once took an overdose of ibuprofen and i was fine - just tired. Don't worry honestly. Now you know what you have done be a bit more aware."
