I was prescribed levaquin for a kidney infection. I think I might be having a mild reaction? I've taken 2 doses now and tonight I noticed itchy hives on my legs. Is this a coincidence or might it be from the levaquin? I don't have any thing else going on. The only other thing that I've ever gotten hives from is celebrex.

tess replied: "It does sound like a mild reaction, it doesn't sound serious, if it gets worst I would stop the medication and call your doctor."

azautodave replied: "a dose of benadryl will help"

Question about kidney infection and levaquin.? At the end of September I went to the emergency room for terrible pain in my side and back, nausea and vomiting as well. They told me I had a urinary tract infection that turned into a kidney infection and prescribed me with Keflex. I took 1 pill 4 times a day for 10 days. I went back to the doctor this Friday and I still have a kidney infection so he prescribed me Levaquin and I have an ultrasound on Wednesday to check for kidney stones. Since I have started taking this medicine (in the mornings) when I go to bed at night, my legs become numb and I get shortness of breath. Just when I am about to fall asleep I quickly wake up and breath deeply to catch some air. Is this a side effect? It terrifies me to go to bed at night now. Thanks...I am a worrier lol I called the pharmacist and he said the symptoms are very rare and that if they get any worse, to contact my doctor. What would be worse than difficulty breathing?

grammy replied: "it sounds like it could be stop taking the medicine and call your doctor"

LadyLynn replied: "Call a 24-hour pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist. They are SO smart, kind, and helpful. The pharmacist will guide you. You'll see. :)"

anderson replied: "kidneyinfection, meds didnt work, still feel sick Kidney Disorders. kidneyinfection"

Gary replied: "If I were you I would call a doctor. What you are describing is peripheral neuropathy I would stop the med and if it gets worse go to the ER. The other reaction you are describing, breathing problems can be lethal. " Central nervous system effects, including convulsions, confusion, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, may occur after the first dose. As with other quinolones, levofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with known or suspected central nervous system disorders that may predispose them to seizures or lower the seizure threshold. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with the use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including levofloxacin. If diarrhea occurs, evaluate for CDAD and treat appropriately. Rare cases of peripheral neuropathy have been reported in patients receiving quinolones, including levofloxacin. Discontinue if symptoms of neuropathy occur to prevent the development of an irreversible condition. ""

Martha Evans replied: "Call your doctor and talk to your pharmacist. Levaquin is a strong antibiotic and has recently been alerted to medical personnel to be on the alert for tendon rupture. It also has several other serious side effects including increased risk for seizure. The thing you described of suddenly waking up and breathing deeply may be associated with abnormal brain activity due to the Central Nervous System irritation from the Levaquin. Also, some people have an abnormal hereditary heart condition that is associated with prolonged QT syndrome. It can also sometimes cause a decrease in urination or complete cessation of urination. The drug hand books indicate that it should be stopped immediately if you have any shortness of breath. It is also been assiciated with the side-effect of peripheral neuropathy, which may be associated with the numbness you are having in your legs. Here is a list of some know side-effects of the fluoroquinolones (Levaquin being in that family of antibiotics): SEIZURES, dizziness, drowsiness, headaceh, insomnia, acute psychoses, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, increased intracranial pressure, tremors. arrythmias (abnormal heart rhythm), hyperglycemia, photosensitivity, hypoglycemia, peripheral neuropathy Call your doctor and your pharmacist and it sounds like you may need to get a different medication for your UTI. You may want to cut out as many carbohydrates as possible, if you are getting frequent UTIs. Sometimes, a low carb/ low sugar diet can help prevent these. There is also a drug for cystitis that you can take OTC called CYSTEX, but check with your doctor, since it sounds like your UTI may be more complicated. CYSTEX acts by forming formaldehyde when it reaches the bladder and the formaldehyde kills the germs. It also has some salicilates in it which helps with the pain, so it shouldn't be taken with asprin. It can be purchased at a local pharmacy, but sometimes you have to ask the pharmacist about it. If taken as directed for 2-3 days, it can sometimes cure an uncomplicated UTI, but check with your doctor. It used to be prescribed by doctors, and some doctors offices still recommend it to their patients. I would not take any more of the Levaquin until you check with your doctor who Rx'd it. Levaquin is good for UTI's but does have some serious side-effects."

when can diarahhea become dangerous, 5 days-once a day have diarehha. was taking levaquin for kidney infection have been off antibiotics 2 weeks now.

Lynne replied: "that sounds like c-diff. you need some fiber in your diet. eat lots of potatoes, bananas and other binding food."

cheryl m replied: "call your doctor about it---but remember the antibiotics are still running through your system --give it more time---stay away from fiber foods that will in-courage the situation--diarrhea is dangerous when it is continuous daily(3-6x) and for more the 3 days---drink plenty of water so there is no dehydration"

can i drink alcohol when im taking Levaquin for my uti/ kidney infection? I have been on the medicine for about 5 days and i feel fine now and just wondering if i could have only like one beer or so when im on this medicine??

stevepitt2 replied: "You could probably get away with one beer."

Willow replied: "i really wouldn't. There are alot of medications that if mixed with alcohol it affects the heart and you could have a heart attack and die. we don't want that. so don't take any chances and just wait till you are off the meds to have a drink ok? please. i hope you feel better."

bonb49931 replied: "Probably wouldn't interact too much...but watch out. Drinking alcohol while you have a UTI or a kidney infection (even if it's being treated) could make it WAY worse. I went out drinking once after I thought I was all done with UTI for 4 days and woke up the next morning pissing blood. Not fun."

Levaquin for severe kidney infection in teenager? Well, i'm 16 and i just got back from the doctor and he prescribed me 500 mg levaquin for a kindey infection that was apparently a pretty bad one. He said if i would have waited one more day i may have needed to be hospitalized. Anyways, so i went online to research the drug and im basically scared out of my wits to take it. I've heard so many horror stories about drastic side effects with this antibiotic. Plus i'm really not even old enough to be taking it without parent consent. Of course my mom was there and consented too it, but still. Has anyone had any bad effects from this? I really don't know what to do now :( I am going to take it, because i know it's bad. I'm just a bit of a hyprocondriac when it comes to medication.

scorpiorising75 replied: "If your kidney infection is bad enough that you are nearly hospitalized, you better either take your prescription or go to the hospital right now for an alternate strategy. This is not the time to be waffling over whether or not you should take your treatment."

Amelia.$$ replied: "Goshh thats harshhh."

Carlos M replied: "Levaquin is an excellent drug for kidney infections. Every medicine has side effects. A kidney infection is very serious. If you end up in the hospital they will probably give a similar or even stronger antibiotic."

MeMa replied: "Any drug can have side effects. You don't want to mess around with your kidneys. If your mom approved you taking this drug, then do so. Watch very carefully for any signs of skin rashes and/or eruptions. If you experience any, discontinue use and seek medical help immediately."

johny c replied: "I have seen lots of people where I work take this medicine with no bad side effects or reactions. Take it with someone present if you are scared so they can help you call the doctor if you have a reaction. Much better to take it now than maybe end up on IV antibiotics later. Good luck"

I have been taking levaquin an antibiotic for 19 days for acute kidney infection, dr wants 2 more wks on it? can that be dangerous?? but my er dr said stop it or i can run into pblms with taking it for an extended time. whatever that means. she said levaquin is astrong drug and to stop it now. my kidney dr, 3rd dr, said take a new medicine-macrodantin after I finish the levaquin and advised to check with the internist dr as to how long i should take levaquin. my 2nd dr the internist wants 2 more wks on levaquin; if i listen to him i will be a month on levaquin

futuredoc replied: "tell him what the other doctors said, and ask him his reason for not switching you to another mercine yes levaquin is an extremleyy strong drug, and can be dangerous if taken for an extended amount of time"

Cycman replied: "Actually, levofloxacin (Levaquin) is a relatively well tolerated drug and long-term use generally poses no great problems. What is more concerning is why your kidney infection has not improved after having been on this for 2+ weeks, so the question is, is the bacteria resistant to this therapy? The more appropriate thing is for you to talk to your doctors and ask them to confer and give you one united answer that makes sense and go with that recommendation."

nicelawn replied: "I was on levaquin 750mg for a total of 5 weeks when I had pneumonia and I was and am still fine. I just had a baby on X-mas eve and I had kidney stones the entire time I was pregnant and I was on Macrodantin for about 7 months. If you are seeing a urologist - listen to him/her . Take the macrodantin- that is what I was on for 7 months. You really only need to see your urologist for your problem"

Why does a kidney infection cause nausea? I am being treated for a kidney infection that originated with a bladder infection. I am healthy. My blood work came back normal so we caught it very early. I have bad flank pain, severely nauseated at times, dizzy and weak upon arising first in the morning. I received a high dose of IV Levaquin 750 mg in the urgent care clinic with 1 L of NS. I also have a low grade fever of only 99.3. I was twice as nauseated upon leaving the clinic than before. My back pain got worse all of a sudden .... 10 minutes into the IV infusion. Why the nausea? Did the antibiotics kick in and that is why my back began hurting almost immediately after the infusion? I am a nurse and this is my first kidney infection. 24yo, 5'10, 160 .... pretty healthy.

lorie v replied: "if you see that your fever is continuing after 2 to3 days go back and see the doctor maybe they gave you the wrong antibiotic for that type of infection the nausea i had that sometimes it comes with taking the antibiotic try gravol go to bed and get plenty of rest make sure you get an urinalysis a week after your antibiotics make sure the infection is all cleared up good luck"

Wendy V replied: "A kidney infection will cause nausea from the pain and infection in your body. Our bodies hate infection s and tend to make us all sick with all sorts of infections. As for the nauesa with the anti-biotics. They were IV and as you know go directly into the blood stream so will take effect pretty rapidly with side effects and adverse reactions. The anti-biotic they gave you has it's not listed in my Australian MIMS, probably got nausea listed as a known side effect or adverse reaction. A lot of anti-biotics do have nausea associated with it. As for the kidney pain? That's one I can't answer. Maybe you got stressed from the nausea, effecting your pain level. If the anti-biotics kicked in it shouldn't have made your pain worse in that area. Kidney infections hurt. I am sorry. I hope this is your first and last infection."

adventureboyseven replied: "Anytime an internal organ is infected or inflamed nausea is often the result, as is pain referred to places the organ is not even close to in some cases. Many drugs cause the side effects you mention. In the case of antibiotics the back pain is often the result of the bacteria being killed off. The large amount of waste products congest or back up your lymphatic system which often causes lower back pain. Running next to our veins and arteries is the waste drainage system or lymphatic system, consisting of tubes like veins and lymph nodes. You can check to see of you lymph nodes are congested by slowly and deeply massaging your lower back. If you can feel little firm lumps like beans or peas in your back tissues your lymphatics are congested and that is a good thing. It means the antibiotics are working. I often tell clients about this as it is common for people to think they are suffering from a bad side effect when in fact the drug is working as it should. Usually the 2 or 3 day of antibiotic therapy the lymphatics get congested and you may feel sore and crappy. Check you nodes, if they are congested stay on the pills and you will be better by day 5. Finish the pills even if you feel good to avoid getting sick again as you may still have a small amount of infection left. Stay well, adventureboyseven"

What effects does Levaquin have on Yaz - can taking levaquin cause spotting or early period? I recently started taking levaquin for a kidney infection and about 4 days in started spotting a lot...so did the antibiotic cause that and if so will I return to normal after I am done with the antibiotic course and still have a period during the scheduled time?

spirit replied: "Most important fact about Levaquin Levaquin has been known to cause dangerous allergic reactions as soon as you take the first dose. Stop taking the drug and call your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following warning signs: Skin rash, hives, or any other skin reaction Rapid heartbeat Difficulty swallowing or breathing Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat For complete info:"

Can an acute kidney infection be antibacterial? I have had a UTI and kidney infection for 3 1\2 weeks with fever, chills, pain etc. I saw my GP at onset and was found to have infected urine. We sent urine out for culture and it did not grow bacteria. Three days later I was in the ER with a full blown acute kidney infection and looked like I was hemmoraging blood in my urine. ER doc says I have infected urine and sent me home on meds and pain killers. Sent labs out - again, no bacteria. Followed up a few days later with GP with fever, chills, pain. Once again, infected urine in the office, no bacteria in the culture. I'm resistant to Cipro, Penicillin, Levaquin and allergic to Macrobid. I've been on Bactrim DS, IV and oral Levaquin, Rocephin and Ceftin - and no improvement. CT @ ER came back negative (i.e. stones). I do not have Interstital Cystitis. I'm a teacher and go back to my kids in about two weeks. I look and feel like death warmed over. This is a vicious cycle I have to get under control.

bud88cynthia replied: "It may not be a bacterial infection, it could be a viral infection or an inflammation due to blockage.. called phyla nephritis or it could be that the tubes from your kidneys to the bladder are too small and cause back up of the urine into your bloodstream... you really need to start drinking cranberry juice and distilled water only. Take Vit c, and flush out your kidneys (dont go overboard).. just a constant flush of clean room temp water... no salt for about a week... I suggest you call a uroligist and get them to do a special test with dye to see why this is happening... it doesnt hurt but if you dont find out what is going on, you could die, easily... I have had these same issues and almost died several times. I had several operations to open the tubes and I am fine now.. good luck.."

S P replied: "you need to be seen by a urologist ASAP!"

okarol replied: "Here's a place where there are other kidney, dialysis and transplant patients, families and caregivers who could give you some suggestions and support - they will understand what you are going through - come to the forum at - it's a online community and you may find some answers there."

Pain on the left side...possible kidney infection? Or pulled muscle? I have pain in my back. Its on the left side, between the armpit and the hip area. It hurts really bad. I went to the emergency room on Thursday and they gave me Levaquin because my kidney is infected, but the pain hasn't gone away. They said that they would run more tests and let me know. They gave me Vicodin and Levaquin. Ive been taking them since Thursday night, it is now Monday morning and my pain hasnt gone away. Ive been sleeping ALL day every day. This morning I couldnt take my Vicodin because Im working. But I was thinking it could possibly be a pulled muscle or something added to the kidney infection. Anybody know about this? I have a doctors appointment for tomorrow afternoon.. Anything would help. Any way to help with the pain?

lodges replied: "Sounds like it's still your kidneys. Did they check you for kidney stones?? Those can cause horrible back pain as well."
