Lexapro Effect On Sleep in Q&A
Will the onsomnia that comes as a side effect with Lexapro go away? I have been on it for about two months. I take 10mg, and the insomnia is a fairly recent side effect. I wake up about 5, and go back to sleep about a half hour later. Will this go away? If so, when? Thanks! Sorry, I meant "insomnia".

piji_caj replied: "It didn't for me, but then again insomnia was one of the first side effects that I noticed. Are you taking it early in the day or late in the day? If you're taking it late, you might want to switch to mornings. Are you symptomatic again? You might need your dosage bumped, if so. This could also just be a transient thing. You can try taking Benadryl for a week or two to see if you stay asleep (assuming you're not already taking a sleep medication). If you're still having problems, you might want to give your doctor a call."

Does sleep effect memory? I know depression can effect memory, but what about sleep? I am depressed and have been on Lexapro (10mg) for about 5 weeks now, but I am not happy with the results I've experienced thus far. Somedays I can go through my school material maybe twice and recall a great deal on info with ease. But other days, like today, I really, really struggle to retain any information in my heads. I didn't sleep well, either. Whoops. I mean head, not heads.

AMY G replied: "Since on some days you retain the information easily, I doubt the Lexapro is the thing that is making you struggle to recall the school material on other days. I think it may be because you didn't sleep well; that can have a definite effect on your ability to register and retain information. Your mind is half asleep!. If the Lexapro isn't helping with your depression that's another thing altogether. I take it and it has helped my depression more than other things I have taken and with fewer side effects, like gaining weight."

Tina J replied: "Hi , I think you should just relax , you know what is important to you in your life , so work hard and do the best you can, youll be fine ,"

Kathryn R replied: "Yes sleep has a lot to do with how well we remember things. That's why teachers are always telling their students to get a good nights sleep before a really big test. Persistent sleep deprivation is a form of torture and it breaks down people pretty quickly. We need sleep for not only our bodies to rest and recuperate but more important our brains need to rejuvenate also."

crazy replied: "a lack of sleep can affect you in many ways, one of which is a poor memory and trouble learning new things."

Is night coughing a side effect of Lexapro? Dry night coughing started about 4-5 weeks after using 10 mg of lexapro daily. It is all night. I'm so tired from not sleeping well.

nytrauma911 replied: "I've never know coughing to be a side effects, but anything is possible. Contact your dr. he could tell you more. Are you taking other drug with the lexapro is also very important to let your dr. know. Good luck."

Alicia F replied: "it wasn't for me. Maybe it's dust or something. You may be getting sick..I would talk to the doctor but lexapro shouldn't be the cause of it"

Lexapro Side Effect: Numbness? So, I had been taking a 10mg Lexapro pill. I took it for about two or three months, then stopped (I saw, nor felt any difference) and had no noticeable side effects. My doctor felt that I still needed to be on Lexapro, so he prescribed twice the amount (20mg) which I promptly picked up and took last night before I went to bed. Shortly after, I started feeling nauseous, and kept having to run to the restroom for fear of throwing up all over the floor. It lasted for a couple of hours before I was able to go to sleep. Then, I woke up this morning, and my left hand was numb. I figured I had slept on it wrong, and that it would go away. But it hasn't. It's lasted the entire day. Just that one hand. Does anyone have any experiences with this medicine, so I know I'm not having some weird reaction? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

boogeywoogy replied: "I've never heard of such a side effect with Lexapro. Why aren't you contacting your doctor about this?"

How long will side effects of Lexapro last? I was prescribed Lexapro for anxiety this past week, and just took the first 10mg pill last night at around 8 p.m., right after I ate dinner. I immediately felt sick to my stomach and nauseous and couldn't get to sleep. Around midnight, I vomited and had some diarrhea. Just curious if anyone else has experienced these symptoms, and how many days I should expect to have them before contacting my doctor? Should I continue to take the medication throughout the weekend?

Kelly R replied: "my boyfriend had taken that and while he did not suffer any of your symptoms, he did expierience sexual side effects. You should wait out the weekend then call the doctor"

I went to sleep doc & talked about depression & anxiety. He put me on LEXAPRO. Any Suggestions on it ? I have 3 boys ages 7, 4, and almost 2. They are great kids. I also have a loving husband. He is a big help and a great dad. He is very supportive to me and the kids. I have some stress issues and I went to see my sleep apnea doctor. He recomended that I try LEXAPRO for a while. I was wondering if any of you have tried it and what were your side effects?

waltdisneymyhero replied: "I've been taking it longer than two moths, it really works, it makes my anxiety dissapear and makes me less Depressive, it will work in a few weeks, Good Blessings!"

savoryjawbox replied: "My husband was started on Lexapro about 6 months ago, and let me tell you, he is a new man. He is so happy and mostly worry-free now. In the first month or so, our sex life suffered. He had no drive whatsoever. It returned after that first month, and that was the only thing we've experienced so far. From our experience, side effects were definitely minimal. I would give it a shot :)"

Amber replied: "I took Lexapro (30mg) for a while, and tried various other anti-depressiants but lexapro always worked best for me and no side effects."

Pico replied: "I took it for about 10 months and it worked really well (40 mg). The only side effect I had was an upset stomach for the first few days, then each time my dose was raised. It helped a lot with my depression but not as much with my anxiety and panic attacks. I was given a separate antianxiety medication for that. I'm no longer on it due to insurance issues."

Susas replied: "Actually the side effects are just what you want-more sleep! Sometimes the first prescription is not enough. I had to have double. And of course it works for only 60% of people anyway."

Lexapro Side Effect - I'm really tired? I've called my doctor, but he's in surgery today, and I was kinda wanting options of others. My doctor said that Lexapro would take approximatley 4-5 weeks to start working, and I've been on it now for 7 days. I have heard that it can make you tired, but I'm not sure if I'm tired because of the medicine or if I'm just tired because that's what happens when you have two kids LOL. Can the pill be affecting me after only 7 days? If so, has anyone experienced sever tiredness? And if you have, did it go away? I'm REALLY tired. Arms feel like jello, can't stop yawning, feel like I could crawl into bed and not get up for another 8 hours. It could just be the fact that I'm not sleeping well, and life is life.... but if it's the pill, I'm not sure I want to continue it. I was taking Wellbutrin XL and had an allergic reaction to it, and have been off it for 8 days now. Just curious to see what other people have experienced. P.S. I'm taking 10mg and I'm taking them at night Thanks in Advance!

Oxford replied: "It is very possible. I took Lexapro for about six months and I didn't feel right the entire time. I'm fairly young so my doctor chose Lexapro as a "mild" alternative for other medicines, such as Ambien which made my LEGS feel like jello, haha. So you should probably talk to your doctor- and if you have I would just stop taking it, which is what I did and started using homepathic methods."

Republican Girl replied: "I started on 10mg last April for panic attacks. Unfortunately, it probably is the Lexapro. I swapped to taking it in the mornings, but it just made me drowsy at about 7pm, which is too early to go to bed. I went back to taking it at night, which made me drowsy at about 2pm. After about a month, the drowsiness went away. I upped my dose to 30mg at one point, where I've gained 45 lbs-very disappointing. But, the Lexapro has been a lifesaver! My panic attacks are basically gone. Good luck!"

jr replied: "I take the same med and this sound normal to me"

Paul A replied: "The first couple weeks or so when you first start taking Lexapro, your system is getting used to it, and you can have "break-in" side effects. Drowsiness is usually one of them. I had very vivid and bizarre dreams, that eventually went away. Something I found out (by experimenting) is the best time for me to take my Lexapro is with dinner. I sleep better at night, and I'm more awake the next day. You might give that a try... Best of luck to you :-)"

Do you take Lexapro and have insomnia? Can't sleep.? I've been on 10mg since June 2nd. I can't sleep 6 or 8 hours. I take it about 1pm. When I go to bed I am up in 2 hours 3 or 4. I even take a PM Tylenol, and 1/2 clonipin 3 times a day. I feel like my body is always awake. It is working for my Anxiety and Depression but my body feels awake all the time. I burry myself in blankets, pillows, a fan, the air on and still wake up. And it is helping me loose weight. I don't want to go through the hassels of switching to something new cuz I need to think clearly w/ my job and don't want to deal w/ the side effects. Couln't sleep on cymbalta either for 2 years. I am on afternoons, nights or days. I know that is messing me up but if I am feeling tired my body should sleep. What can I take to help me sleep?

Ali R replied: "Depression affects your sleeping habits, so if your "down in the dumbs" that could be why."

The Romantic Egoist replied: "If its pharmaceutical than talk to doctor about changing medications. But there are tons of things you can do to stop insomnia naturally: 1. Exercise in the day no sooner than 4 hours to bed time 2. Get into a routine = go to bed at a point regardless, get up at a point regardless 3. Eat healthy and stop 2 hours before bed 4. If possible move tv and computer out of bedroom. Beds are for sleeping and sex. 5. No computer or tv an hour before bed. 6 Read the dictionary while waiting for sleep. you can be awake but don't do anything fun while awake. Just stay in bed and read something dull."

Paul A replied: "I wish you'd said when you go to bed. I found the best time for me to take my Lexapro is with dinner. I sleep better at night, and I'm more awake the next day. I usually hit the hay between 10 and 11 pm."

Are these side effects with Lexapro normal? -I've gotten nauseous, almost to the point of throwing up. -I feel verrrry spaced out, almost to where I dont feel familiar with where i am. -my sense of hearing is heightened, and every little sound makes me jump -I've had a small headrush -My eyes are dilated, and im very sleepy. -Last night I stayed up till 2 am zoned into the discovery channel , and woke up at 5 am, could not go back to sleep.

Pegs PAC replied: "Kati...all may be side effects of Lexapro, but should not last more than a few days to a week. Try taking it at bedtime so you can sleep through the worst of the nausea and sleepiness. Lexapro is known for having less intense side effects than other SSRI medications. I have taken it myself and only had side effects two or three days. We all do react differently to these and other kinds of medications so it problems continue past a week or so, you should talk to your doctor."
