Andropause -- "Male menopause": Men's estrogen levels rise and testosterone levels drop after age 40? Thoughts? What do you think about this? Wait til 2:00, that's the good part, where he touches on feminism. During menopause, women's estrogen levels drop and their testosterone levels rise -- that's why women in their 40's begin to have an increase of facial hair and body hair, and hair starts to thin in their scalps. So, when I turn 40, and my estrogen levels rise, will my voice get higher pitched? Will I start eating chocolate ice cream out of the pint, while watching Oprah and talking on the phone twirling on the cord and kicking my leg up in the air? Will I start to complain & whine more? Will I go on G&WS and bash men? What exactly are the effects of male menopause? The second half of the video, the doctor gives advice on how we should prevent this. Simply put, like most things in life -- nutrition and exercise. We can prevent the rise in estrogen and keep our testosterone levels high if we follow his steps. I will definitely heed to his advice. Heaven forbid I become estrogen-laden and end up like some of the women on this forum.

attitudemister replied: "no go away"

Rio Madeira replied: "I wish you'd put your fingers on andropause and stop bashing women all the time."

. replied: "You seem rather aggressive, perhaps a drop in testosterone is just the thing for you."

Dracula's (#91) luver! replied: "Well, I know several men [in my family] past the age of 40 and they all are doing fine. I guess suffering from andropause isn't as common as women suffering menopause. Any man 40+ should have his prostrate and colon checked every year. Hormone levels should be checked once your past 50."

RoVale replied: "I'm in my 40s and have not noticed an increase in body hair and facial hair. If anything, I've actually noticed the opposite has happened. While I never had lush eyebrows to begin with, they have now virtually disappeared."

c'mon, cliffy replied: ""Andropause" is an example of medicalizing a normal occurrence. It used to be called ageing. There is no such thing as "male menopause." When your time comes, be a man and deal with it."

Sessy R replied: "You know some doctors say if a guy touches a baby his testosterone drops. I don't know if it's true though. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I don't think your the type of dude that would become girly all of a sudden. And lay off the leg kicking thing I love to do that! And chocolate! I love chocolate! LOL!!!! Just do the things that doctor said for you to do you will be fine."

I'm a fit male in my 30's. My testosterone level dropped below range, and my estrogen went up.? I used Clomid to lower estrogen and things improved for a while, my testosterone rose, and my E2. Then about 10 days later thing went back to low 'T' and high E2 again. What happened please, any knowledgeable ideas folks??

Jon replied: "Well one plus side to that is your chances at going bald will decrease."

surreal1254 replied: "I don't what to do but as you know see your doctor or maybe see another doctor for a second opinion. It's probably nothing serious hopefully but you never want to chances with your health."

Did you know, that both men and women have testosterone and estrogen? although testosterone is a "male hormone" and estrogen a "female hormone", both are found in either sex, although generally testosterone levels in men tend to be significantly greater than testostorone levels in women and vice versa when it comes to estrogen. have a look at the functions of both. so feminine men will likely have low testosterone levels and high estrogen levels compared to most men and masculine women will have somewhat higher levels of testosterone compared to other women. testosterone increases sex drive in women :), but it also increases body hair :( if you want to read more... I know most of you know it, but there may be one or two who did not.

David replied: "I guess you learn something new every day."

Holly replied: "Duh. I think I learned that in 9th grade biology."

nickipettis replied: "yes, i have known that for a long time."

foxy Teri replied: "Yes I did actually."

Mike replied: "oh wow who cares about that. That's appearant I mean look at people every you go."

Chizzy replied: "Yes, I did know that. Isn't it odd that too much testosterone in women will make them hairy and more aggressive sexually, but too much testosterone in men will make them bald, emotional and they will grow man boobs."

makeup girl replied: "yeah, I think physical factors play an important role indeed."

divina replied: "Yes, I knew that. Wherefore hast thy ancient manner of speech departed thee, yea, and thy hateful sentiments in favor of elementary biology? Methinks it is an improvement."

Sadako-in-town replied: "yes. i knew that, don't you worry. duh. i always believe i have so-called somewhat higher testosterone level because i'm psychologically more masculine than most of my girlfriend. but increasing sex drive is not on my list o_o;"

monmichka replied: "Yes. I thought everyone knew that."

Louise C replied: "Yes, I knew that, what of it? The significance lies in the fact that men have a lot more testosterone, and women a lot more estrogen."

origamimark replied: "Yep."

A Pregnant!! Christian replied: "Um, yeah, I knew that. I thought it was pretty commonly known. That's why post-menopausal women sometimes have issues with facial hair...there isn't enough estrogen being produced to counter the amount of testosterone being produced. I don't know just how responsible they are for masculine women or feminine men. Often that behaviour is the result of choice. Men usually have to work at being femmy; it isn't the result of hormones. Or are you talking looks? Even that can be accounted for by things like what their parents look like."

Red Hot Chili Peppers replied: "Yes."

snufkins return replied: "that testorone thing doesnt apply to me as i have an exceptionally high sex drive but very little body hair as i am blonde"

Kym replied: "all babys start out female, after several weeks the male hormones kick in and start to change some to male. Its a balancing act and many things can and do go wrong, but overall the system works pretty well...dont you think?"

*~* Princess ™ *~* replied: "Yes....it's basic GCSE biology"

Claire replied: "Yes, we knew that. We're not retarded."

High Free Testosterone? I wanted to know if someone could please tell me if excessively high "Free Testosterone" levels can cause high "Estrogen" levels in males? Thanks!

Logon17 replied: "Man and women have both testosterone and estrogen. Of course each has it is reverse levels of the other. But a higher testoserone level in men will cause an imbalance and can raise the estrogen level as well. Weightlifters who have taken steriods see this all the time. They will develop woman-like breast due to the body producing more estrogen to compensate for the much higer levels of tesosterone in the body."

Blues Man replied: "I'm sending you a page & a site that will answer your question & any more you may have. I have serum testosterone of 452. I am a 39 year old white male. The refrence range is 241-827. I have a free testestorone of 4.02 the refrence range is 1 - 2.70. What can this mean. I have an igf1 of 417 the refrence range is 114-492. Could I be producing too much testosterone and its bieng converted to estrogen. My erections arent as hard or as frequent as they were 1 year ago. Any help ? Answer Subject: Re: free and total testosterone levels. Answered By: richard-ga on 12 Oct 2002 09:03 PDT Hello and thank you for your question. As you may have discovered in your own Internet search, one of the factors implicated in the decline of free testosterone levels is excessive binding of testosterone to carrier proteins that divert it for use in the production of other proteins/hormones, including estrogen. The therapy that directly addresses this situation is testosterone replacement, but there is some controversy about whether testosterone replacement correlates with increased risk of prostate cancer. Obviously you should consult with a qualified urologist about whether that route is appropriate for you at this time. "Testosterone within the circulation is principally bound to proteins, the most important of which is sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Only about 2 percent of testosterone is unbound (bio-available) and therefore free to enter cells in order to effect its biological actions by binding to androgen receptors...." "Hypotestosteronaemia levels [that is, low levels] quoted in papers vary between around 300 ng/dl (10.4 nmol/L) and 400 ng/dl (13.9 nmol/L)." HYPOGONADISM - WHAT IS A LOW LEVEL OF TESTOSTERONE? "Bioavailable testosterone refers to the 'free' portion of the hormone unbound to carrier proteins which is able to act directly upon target tissues." Sexual Dysfunction and Male Hormones "It is well known that androgen levels decline in men with age. Furthermore, as a result of the increase in binding capacity for testosterone in serum, there is an early and more dramatic decline in free testosterone, the physiologically functioning component of serum testosterone, than in the total testosterone concentration...." "The ideal therapy should consist of creating physiologic testosterone concentrations (400 to 700 ng/dL in blood taken in the morning) and restoring circadian variations." Hormone Replacement Therapy for Aging Men Since your score is higher than the 300-to-400 range that normally merits treatment, you are still within the 'normal' range, albeit at the low end of it. So you should look before you leap into a course of treatment. The following article talks about estrogen conversion and hormone replacement, but I think it's a bit over-entusiastic in its promotion of the treatment: MALE HORMONE MODULATION THERAPY Not to scare you, but here's one more thing that you should be aware of: "Of great interest is a recent finding that men with coronary artery disease have significantly lower levels of plasma testosterone than controls and that intracoronarv testosterone infusion in men with coronary artery disease increases coronary blood flow. Such findings suggest that age related declines in testosterone in men may be associated with heart disease ...." So besides discussing hormone replacement with a urologist, if you haven't had a general physical in the last few years you should do that too. Search terms used: free testosterone serum decline hypogonadism I hope you find this information useful and responsive to your question. Of course you should not consider this answer as medical advice (and I'm not a physician). My free testosterone is almost 2 times higher than it is supposed to be while my total is at the low end. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clarification of Answer by richard-ga on 12 Oct 2002 12:53 PDT Hello again. My answer focused on the 452 total score because that is somewhat in the low range and is consistent with the symptoms you describe. Is the 4.02 figure that you gave a calculation of your Free Androgen Index (FAI)? I assume it is, because my research indicates that FAI's reference range is 1.6 to 2.9. If it is your FAI that is being reported to you, you need not be concerned. Normal SHBG levels vary widely. The data given below puts the SHBG range at 13 to 71 nmol/L . Because SHBG is the denominator of the fraction it generates wide swings in FAI values. "The FAI is the ratio of total testosterone to SHBG. It provides a simple assessment of physiologically active testosterone. FAI = 100 x TT (in nmol/L) / SHBG (in nmol/L)" Reproductive Endocrinology Free Testosterone (Bioavailable Testosterone): Adult Male Reference Interval Free Testosterone: 47.0-244.0 pg/mL % Free Testosterone: 1.6 - 2.9% Testosterone Age 20 - 39 years: 400 - 1080 ng/dL 40 - 59 years: 350 - 890 ng/dL 60 years and over: 350 - 720 ng/dL Sex Hormone Binding Globulin [SHBG]: Age 13 - 15 years 13 - 63 nmol/L 16 - 18 years 11 - 54 nmol/L 19 - 150 years 13 - 71 nmol/L LABORATORY SERVICES HANDBOOK Male Hormones "Measurement of free androgen index (FAI) is a method sometimes used to measure free testosterone levels. There is much difficulty in using this as a measurement of free testosterone in men as the FAI was a method designed for use in women. The reference range appears to differ widely across Australia. There does not seem to be a reason for this variation." Male Hormones Please confirm what units your figure for free testosterone has been calculated in. If it is something other than FAI, I will take another look at it. Thanks, richard-ga -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Request for Answer Clarification by gapgapgap-ga on 14 Oct 2002 07:00 PDT Sorry once again I made a mistake I have a free testosterone count of 18.17 out of a range of 5 - 21. My ratio of free to total was 4.02 which was almost 2x as high as normal. What can you find out about this ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clarification of Answer by richard-ga on 14 Oct 2002 15:42 PDT Hello again: I think it's best to look at the serum testosterone and free testosterone figures separately. You report serum testosterone of 452, free testosterone of 18.17, and 18.17/452 = 4.02% free. The reference range for serum testosterone is 241-827 (this source says 350-1030 with a mean of 627 over ages 20-50); the reference range for free testosterone is 5-21 (this source says 5.2-28); and the reference ratio is 1-2.7 (this source says 1.5-3.2). (page 36-37) I really think you shouldn't worry about the ratio. True, your serum number is a little on the low side and your free number is a little on the high side. But to say your ratio is twice as high as normal exaggerates the effect. Here's an arithmetical example. Say a ratio of 2.5% is 'normal', and arises from a ratio of 12.5/500. If you couple a 30% increase to the numerator with a 30% decrease to the denominator, the fraction becomes 16.25/350 or about 4.6%. So there's nothing unusual about your numbers. As for your symptoms, a visit to a urologist would still be a good idea. Sincerely, richard-ga Comments Subject: Re: free and total testosterone levels. From: dani32-ga on 17 Feb 2005 15:04 PST Hi: I am a 30 yr old male and have experienced hot flashes now for about 3.5 months. I have seen my regular PCP who did all the bloodwork and found absolutely nothing. I have gone to an endocrinologist who has repeated all the bloodwork, has ordered a 24 hr urine 5hiaa, and an octrioscan, and still nothing. My testosterone level is 334 ng/dL and free test is 2.4% or 80.5pg/mL. Do you believe I could suffer from Hypogonadism? If yes, what should I do to convince my doctor that he should give me the proper treatment? Excess Estrogen AND Excess Testosterone? I am a male (21) and have been diagnosed with excess Estrogen. Although my Free Testosterone levels are also very high! How can this be??? From what I know if one of these hormones is high the other will be low, and vise-versa. Is this not the case? Thanks!

John I replied: "Hormones are produced by glands, you seem to have glands that are working overtime!"

Poof replied: "Take a supplement called chrysin. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone (andorgens) into estrogens. It's not expensive."

Juan R replied: "There are various natural methods of leveling out your hormones. Leafy vegetables and nuts help, and so does some exposure to sunlight. Check out Mistermanpower.com, its got a full guide on this that I've been following, and my testosterone has gone up, and so has my sex drive. Feel free to email me if you got any questions"

RightLight replied: "In men, Estrogen is mostly created by converting testosterone to estrogen by aromotase. This means that USUALLY, More estrogen = less test because a lot of the test is being converted. However, if you have a condition that is causing more testosterone than normal, it is safe to assume that both can be high. The condition would spike test which in turn spikes the estrogen. This is essentially what happens with steriod users if they do not block it by various means. They pump in extra test, but some of the extra gets converted to estrogen too. This can lead to gyno and such in steriod abusers."

Dr. Nick replied: "No its not the case. When there is unusaual levels of testosterone you have to understand that the levels of estrogen will increase too. In a male body the levels of estrogen are very low and the levels of testosterone are very high. So, when the doctor says that your estrogen is extremely high he/she means that it is high for a male. Imagine it like a two parallel lines that have to stay parallel with each other. If one increases so does the other."

Ring finger longer than the index finger means your Testosterone level is higher than the Estrogen? Longer index finger means your Estrogen (female) hormone is higher than the Testosterone (male) hormone. Is this true? Whay?

Jennifer replied: "I believe its true. I have no idea why it happens but lots of things happen depending on the amount of certain hormones and chemicals we are exposed to in the womb. Just one of those weird wonders of nature i guess."

Szuch replied: "Haha... so THAT'S why i'm a lesbian. My ring finger is longer! Well, i had never heard that before, about the ring finger thing... kinda interesting. Not sure if it's true. My grandma always used to tell me that if your second toe is longer than your big toe, then you'd be the ruler of your marriage... (I believe that, mine's shorter...and my g/f OWNS me, LOL!)"

Da Ben Dan replied: "LOL I don't know...but looking at my hands I might be able to sell testosterone on ebay."

M replied: "Not "higher" than estrogen. A higher level of testosterone promotes the growth of the ring finger. Usually a man's ring finger is longer than the index finger. And vice versa for women's fingers. There are also more controversial studies that show gay men and lesbian women have a higher percentage of showing the typical finger lengths of the opposite sex."

Can you comment on the long-term efficacy of Arimidex as a treatment for the reduction of estrogen in males? I am a 45 year old male with high estradiol levels (Estrogen E2), which interferes with my body's ability to make use of my available testosterone. This condition requires medical treatment. I followed the advice of Life Extension Foundation's article "Male Hormone Modulation Therapy", and took a 7 week trial to reduce my estrogen naturally using Chrysin and DIM, combined with absorption enhancers Zinc, Vitamin E, and peperine. Unfortunately my estradiol is still a bit high. The article states that when natural therapies fail, the only alternative is to receive a treatment of Arimidex (Anastrazole) in a very small dose. I recently went to an endocrinologist seeking this therapy. She stated that Arimidex is not a recommended therapy for males with high estradiol because it is effective for only a very short time. Not trusting her opinion, I reviewed many studies on Arimidex that indicate it is very commonly used for long term treatment. Can you explain this contradiction?

true_wellness replied: "You have a harmone system dysfunction and can corrected safe and naturally. Liosten to what others have to say about glyconutrients. "

Any males have low testosterone? My Wife and I are trying to get pregnant, so I just got a routine blood test to see if I had any strange illnesses or anything. Plus I am very overweight for 24 years old (6'1, 320 lbs), so I wanted to get other things checked. I also checked for lyme disease because I live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and we are actually in the most common place for lyme disease in North America. So here were my results: Good: Cholestorol, Blood Sugar, No Diabetes, No Lyme Disease. Bad: Extremely high estrogen level, and extremely low testosterone level. I was like wtf? He found this very odd, but treatable. He prescribed a cream called "AndroGel". He said that very low testosterone in males can cause decreased sex drive, depression, gynocamastia (enlargement of male breasts), lack of energy, and even lack of concentration. I have every single one of these symptoms. So I guess I am typing this "Question" to act more like an "Answer". Every doctor I have ever seen has said I have depression and need to exercise. When the truth is that my extremely low testosterone is the answer to all of my problems, and I am so happy to have finally found an answer. Just wondering if anyone else out there has had blood tests and found low testosterone and what types of treatments you have had and symptoms as well.

Dave replied: "Iv had most of the problems youve listed so i think i'l go get tested for testosterone At least with low testosterone you shouldnt loose your hair"

fidgit replied: "I have had all the symptoms you listed, and then some. I will contact you and give your more info. I have been using AndroGel more than 4 years. It's a wonderful topical gel with excellent results."

anthonyj replied: "i'm not on testosterone but i know a bit about it. without getting the full picture it's possible that your obesity has caused both the increased estrogen and decreased testosterone. many people are unaware that fat cells produce estrogen and that estrogen in turn shuts down your natural production of testosterone. the good news is that this is potentially reversed by losing the fat. assuming this is the result of obesity you should exercise more, lose the fat, restore your own production of testosterone, then you may be able to stop the AndroGel and you and your wife might get pregnant. good luck!"

I thought this was quite interesting, what do you think? Testosterone and fingers ------------------------------ A survey of the finger lengths of over 100 male and female academics at the University by senior Psychology lecturer Dr Mark Brosnan has found that those men teaching hard science like mathematics and physics tend to have index fingers as long as their ring fingers, a marker for unusually high estrogen levels for males. It also found the reverse: those male academics with longer ring fingers than index fingers – the usual male pattern – tended not to be in science but in social science subjects such as psychology and education. In the general population, men typically have higher levels of testosterone than women, but the male scientists at the University of Bath have lower testosterone levels than is usual for men – their estrogen and testosterone levels tend to match those of women generally. Dr. Brosnan said that men having levels of testosterone very much higher than normal for males would also create the right hemisphere dominated brain, which could help in science. The extremes of low testosterone and high testosterone for men would create the scientific brain, and the normal range in the middle would create the 'social science' brain. The question also arises as to why more women, who have this lower level of testosterone, are not in science, which is male-dominated, with only one in 40 science professors being a woman. The short answer is that we don't know: the high levels of estrogen in women may act differently on the brain and not give them the spatial skills that men with similar levels of the hormone have. "The study of my colleagues at the University of Bath was also interesting in that it shows that women in social science tend to have a higher level of testosterone level relative to their estrogen level, making their brains closer to those of men in general, said Dr. Brosnan." =&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=55d491864ad46a9059893a377b45d228

Rainbows replied: "My ring finger is longer then my index finger..."

Annie Oakley replied: "So what exactly are the stats/results? 'Tend to', 'may have', 'typically have' are not scientific peer reviewed study definitive results..... Just very broad generalisations. I would be interested in the journal links if you have them.... If you have at least 10 good ones then I might take this seriously. :-)"

Kat V replied: "Actually Annie, scientific journals usually do use only generalisations when writing papers of this type- academic journals rarely deal in absolutes."

starchaser1980 replied: "A senseless Feminist once told me that Borderline Retarded Chimpanzees are taught to cut and paste. :Reported."

The Dude Abides replied: ""Men having levels of testosterone very much higher than normal for males would also create the right hemisphere dominated brain, which could help in science. The extremes of low testosterone and high testosterone for men would create the scientific brain, and the normal range in the middle would create the 'social science' brain." This article is poorly written and subject to a lot of misinterpretation. It's known that a more female typical brain is more asymmetrical on average- i.e. the social science brain. It also doesn't explain whether it's discussing prenatal testosterone levels or adult testosterone level. You can change your blood serum testosterone levels rapidly through a new exercise regime and correct diet."

♥The Mrs.♥ replied: "As a teacher I do believe gender and hormones do have effects on our brains. To what extent, I am unsure and I do realize there are always exceptions. But even in the young years I see a general trend. I have heard this study with finger length before, however I had not heard it related to specific professions. To me this is contrary to stereotypes that males are logical--Science and Math having proof or logical sequencing/order, as opposed to social theories and beliefs which largely make up social sciences. My husband and I are both teachers, my husband-Boys high school PE and I 1st grade. My index fingers are actually quite a bit longer than my ring fingers...closer to my middle finger than my ring finger in fact. My husbands is the opposite."

male & female sex drive question? 10 points? I was reading an article where it stated The role of testosterone in female body! It plays a vital role in building up muscle mass and muscle tone, lose body fat, strengthening the bone density,[B] increasing libido energy levels, and the frequency of coitus, and, for some, it enhances mood as well as metabolic activities. It also provides relief from vasomotor symptoms of menopause, reduces breast tenderness and enhances orgasm. Though the testosterone levels in the female body are only ten percent of the levels in male body, the testosterone levels decline rapidly as we age–especially during menopause. These levels fall off, along with other ovarian hormones–estrogen and progesterone, due to the decline in the functioning of ovaries and adrenal glands. So, when the testosterone (ovarian hormone) declines in female body, women undergoes a decrease in sex drive (libido), decreased sexual pressure and enjoyment, decreased orgasmic response, decreased muscle mass, depression and low energy levels. so that being said, here is my question: If testosterone increases a woman's sex drive and a woman only has 10 percent of a males testosterone does that mean a mans sex drive is ten times higher than a womans?

James C replied: "No because testosterone is used in many more functions for a man."

Ben replied: "yes we are horny buggers"

Readio Head replied: "not really.... i actually study in that subject. its kinda tricky. the numbers are different in different peoples. and some time its higher in women's. sorry for my bad english , im Mexican."

missnae replied: "yeh it explains why they always want sex and wake up with a hard on every morning"

lordvr replied: "Actually no, testosterone has effects the male and female bodies differently. So even a small amount makes them just as horny, if not hornier than guys."

Britney replied: "Yes thats True . I believe it is so"

shutupandlisten...please replied: "lol im a girl but i swear i got a sex drive of a dude"
