Has anyone taken Wellbutrin for depression during pregnancy? I have been on Wellburtin for mild depression for many years. I am now 9 weeks pregnant and am continuing to take Wellbutrin. It is a catagory C which means there are no known risks for birth defects but it has not been cleared either. It is the first medication that What To Expect lists as a good med to take for depression during pregnancy. I do have a friend who took it her whole pregnancy and had a happy healthy baby girl. I am wondering if there are others out there who have had healthy babies while taking Wellbutrin. Than ks in advance.

Nikki K replied: "ive actually never taken it but i wouldnt take anything being pregnant. im 16 weeks now and i dont even like to take tylenol even though its safe."

Is it safe to start taking Wellbutrin 6 1/2 mo. into pregnancy? I am 6 1/2 months pregnant and am showing early signs of post pardem depression. My doctor wants me to start taking Wellbutrin now but I don't feel safe doing so. I have read alot of bad things about it so I feel safer not filling the perscription.

♫♪ Nekkid Bootie ♪♫ replied: "This would be best to talk to you OB/GYN about.. Wellbutrin is in category C for pregnancy... meaning "Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks" It may depend on why you are taking it, how bad you need the drug.. the benefits may outweigh the risks."

Lexepro or Wellbutrin during pregnancy? I need an antidepressant, and my doctor gave me the choice between Lexepro and Wellbutrin. I was wondering if anyone has taken either durning pregnancy, and how it turned out. Or if anyone has heard anything about them. I'm just trying to figure out which one to use. 8 weeks along

fawn replied: "I have taken Wellbutrin when I was pregnant. My daughter turned out fine."

Eden A replied: "I took Lexapro for both of my pregnancies and the babies were fine and so was I."

shannon m replied: "i've taken both. i liked lexepro i took it though out my second pregnancy and postpardom. welbutrin made me have no emotions. i was never happy or sad or anything. i went to disney world while on this med and not one picture of me smiling but i was not unhappy. when you can't smile at disney world, theres a problem.(lol)"

lilguysmum replied: "I took Wellbutrin and Zoloft during both pregnancies and had no problems. The doctor took me off Wellbutrin when I started breastfeeding, however, due to potential documented complications of the medicine with breastfeeding, but it's perfectly safe during pregnancy. But, in general, Lexapro and Zoloft are the actual "antidepressant" medications, while Wellbutrin helps with maintaining your energy (since the antidepressants decrease your energy)."

Paxil/Wellbutrin and Pregnancy? I have panic disorder/ severe anxiety and cannot function without medication. The only combination of drugs that has actually worked with me is 12.5 miligrams of Paxil and 150 miligrams of Wellbutrin per day. I know that Wellbutrin is a Class B drug (ok for pregnancy) and Paxil is a Class D drug (not recommended for pregnancy). I've tried numerous times to go off Paxil to no avail, the side effects are too overwhelming. I want to try to get pregnant but am concerned that these drugs might harm the baby. My doctor has told me that in my case, the benefits of the drugs outweigh the risks to the fetus. But I'm still concerned. What are your thoughts?

mimegamy replied: "Please do not take Paxil if you want to have a baby. Find another drug that works."

scuba pants! replied: "Well, sure, the benefits outweigh the risk because you are the one who is alive and your baby is only a potential flipper baby. Your life comes first because your life is the only one that exists until you have your baby. Why not adopt nationally or internationally or become a foster parent? With a world that is on the verge of overpopulation and the fact that life is suffering, why bring a child into this world? Do you hate your potential children? You must and everyone else who is suffering from overpopulation. There are enough people on this planet breeding. You not procreating? It's not going to make a huge impact, but it will be one less mouth to feed."

Star Glazer replied: "Read the attached source I found on the web. My opinion is that the benefits outweighs the risk. Other issues you have to consider: -How will a newborn affect your mental status? -What's your family circumstances/how supportive is your partner? -How will it impact you financially?"

go_ask_alice replied: "I can relate, sometimes if not taking the medicine has such negative effects on you it's is better to take it. 12.5 is a pretty low dose of paxil. You should see what can be done to get off the paxil gradually, or lower your dose even more."

Is wellbutrin XL safe during pregnancy? And breastfeeding? I am 17 weeks pregnant. I was on Paxil before I got pregnant and when I found out a 4 weeks pregnant I quit cold turkey. Ever since then I have been extremely moody, angry, short tempered, emotional and and VERY depressed. This should be a happy time for me. At my appointment yesterday my OB/GYN prescribed me 150mg Wellbutirn XL a day. I have found inconclusive information on wether it is safe during pregnancy. My Doctor insists that is is one of the safest I can be on. I have read other things like, that you need to breastfeed after (which I want to) so the baby wont have withdrawls, and then I have dont breastfeed at all or get off the med. Which I WANT TO breastfeed. Has anyone else taken Wellbutrin while pregnant?? Are your children healthy?? Anyone have complications with Wellbutrin during pregnancy?? My delemah here is that I have tried for the first 4 months to help my depression, (I took nothing for the first 4 months, my last appointment and blood work has all come back healthy and the ultrasound showed healthy weight and no abnormalities)with no success. If I am stressed out and angry, Increased Bloodpressure ALL THE TIME, that cant be good for the baby either, and of course if I am dead, that is obviously not good.

Brad & Cola replied: "you should talk to your dr... i dont think so!"

veronica replied: "I am thinking thats probably not very good for your baby, but I guess listen to your dr."

SusieQ replied: "i sure it is safe cuz on my last pregnancy they gave it to me to help me quit smoking i not about what doseage is safe i would talk to your doctor and explain how you are when you dont have this medication best of luck"

Clair D replied: "Wellbutrin IS ok for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I am currently taking Lexapro and am 34 weeks. I was on Cymbalta pre-pregnancy and quit cold turkey because it's not safe. Tried for a few months without anything but couldn't handle the depression and mood swings. My doctor had suggested Wellbutrin but I am allergic to it (it contains sulfa). There are a lot of inconclusive studies about pregnancy and anti-depressants so you'll never find one that makes you completely happy. But Wellbutrin XL is one of the safest you can take and I would be taking it if I weren't allergic to it. I know a lot of mothers who were on it and have perfectly healthy normal babies."

deeann replied: "Yes, it's considered safe during pregnancy. I am on 300 mg a day. I haven't had my baby yet, but I haven't had any complications yet, either. It is the ONLY antidepressant I would feel comfortable taking during pregnancy, as it is a class B drug (which means it's considered safe.) Plus, it was by far the best medication I have taken for depression. The OB also suggested I take a GABA supplement, which I was unsure about, but I tried it and it is awesome, too."

krista h replied: "i have depression too. the reason you shouldn't take anti-depressants is b/c they don't know what kind of damage it can do to its full capacity. please talk to your therapist about this. i found out at 6 weeks i was pregnant and that was the first thing i talked about. you really need to talk to a therapist and they can work with your ob/gyn to figure out together the best route. in general the therapist will want to see you often. oh and fiy everyone's pregnancy is different and what will work for some might not work for you. it is very important for the well being of both of you."

Seroquel and Wellbutrin during pregnancy? Ok first off if people are going to be rude, then please don't bother to answer. For the past 5 years I have been taking Seroquel and Wellbutrin for depression and PTSD. I found out on Monday that I'm about 7 weeks pregnant. The doctor told me to stop those meds, I did that cold turkey. I am a wreck right now. I have not slept in 4 nights, I'm crying all day because I'm so tired. I'm scared that in my current state right now I'm going to end up having a miscarriage because I'm so upset. I think I'm just SO tired I don't know what to do. Has anyone on here taken an anti-depressant or sleeping aid during pregnancy and everything was ok? I called my OB and they moved my appointment up to come in first thing on Tuesday to see what they can do. For people that have stopped taking psych meds so quick, how did you make it through this first few weeks of withdrawl? I'm sure there's nothing I can do but just watned to hear other people's experience. Thanks.

Emily replied: "I take Effexor now for my depression and my Dr said that it was such a low dose that it was okay to take it while I'm pregnant. I guess it depends on how much milligrams your taking. I know withdrawal from these pills can be hard. I wish you the best of luck!"

simply fire replied: "Well, first of all I feel for you, I am a fellow sufferer of both PTSD and depression. And I am pregnant, nearing the 5mth marker. I know how devastatingly hard quitting those types of meds can be...I quit effexor and klonopin cold turkey. And paxil. It was hellish, but most of the side effects subsided in one to two weeks. There are some safe meds to take during pregnancy. As far as having a miscarriage, i went thru some extreme emotional turmoil, my brother who i was close to died at 28 of a drug overdose, I did not miscarry. I think you will be okay. It is always best to err on the side of caution during pregnancy, NO drugs are best. But also pregnancy is going to cause you to be 5-10x more emotional. You should talk to your doctor about which meds are safe. I am not taking anything, but I was off those long before my pregnancy started because they didn't work for me at all. However, I know how it feels and i think everything will turn out okay. if you can just grit your teeth and bear it thru the next two weeks, that sh*t will go away. And i think you'll make a great mom because you already have suffered and are that much more aware of protecting a vulnerable child from pain in this world. Good Luck"

BlueJay replied: "I understand how you feel. I suffer from depression and bipolar disorder and am 7-8 weeks pregnant. I was taking Trazadone, Zyprexa and Zoloft but as soon as I found out that I was pregnant I also quit cold turkey. So far I have been okay, trouble sleeping, mood swings but I keep thinking of the baby and I try to remain positive. Go for walks to try and clear your head, listen to positive music. Although I know everyone is different. If you haven't already I would consult your psychiatrist and your Ob doctor. It all depends on how you feel. Studies have shown that excessive anxiety and stress can lead to an increased risk of preterm birth, low birthweight. (What to expect when you're expecting baby book.) The same book says Wellbutrin is okay but pregnant women exposed to SSRIs in the womb may experience short-term withdrawal symptoms lasting no more than 48 hours, including excessive crying, tremors, sleep problems, and gastrointestinal upset immediately after birth. Bottom line, what matters is how you feel, because as I'm sure you know untreated depression can be very damaging to your baby emotionally and psychologically. Good luck and all the best!"

Mischele, RN replied: "You should NEVER stop those meds cold turkey. It can cause a rebound of effects to where they're worse than the original problem. You should wean down. Also Wellbutrin is perfectly fine to take while pregnant. It's Zoloft that is the more controversial one and even then it's not horribly bad for the baby. They just are more lethargic at birth than normal babies, but they snap out of it in a week or two. I wouldn't redcommend taking the Seroquel, though. It's a class C drug which means the effects aren't studied on any babies so they don't know the outcomes. You only take Class C's if the benefits outweigh the risks. Ambien is perfectly fine to take while pregnant. I, myself, take 12.5mg of Ambien CR and I'm 7 weeks pregnant. I also take 300mg of Wellbutrin SR and they said that was fine too. They told me that it's the Zoloft I shoudl stop and I was on 75mg. I started 50 mg the next day for a week and then 25mg the week after that (1/2 a pill) and then stopped last week. My doctors said the Ambien was ok and that they even prescribe it for women later in pregnancy that can't sleep. Definitely take your wellbutrin again starting today. Don't stop it cold turkey."

Taking Wellbutrin during pregnancy? I am about 5 months pregnant and have tried, unsuccessfully, to stop smoking. My Obgyn has prescribed Wellbutrin to help me quit. Are there any studies showing the effect on a fetus/do the pros outweigh the cons/ Also, what Class is it rated/

Janey replied: "it's actually one of the safer antidepressants during pregnancy.. it's one of the safest selection. it's a category B I think...."

AbeLincolnParty replied: "There is limited data with regard to Wellbutrin (bupropion) use during pregnancy. There has been one study to compare the birth defect rate between users and non-users of bupropion, but it seems the focus was on the first 3 months of pregnancy. The label information above gives a phone number for pregnant bupropion users to register, so that the birth defect rate can be tracked: 1-800-336-2176 Note: alcohol can greatly increase the risk of convulsions in people taking bupropion, not while the alcohol is in the body, but after it is cleared from the body."

Has anyone takin wellbutrin during pregnancy for anxiety? Or any anxiety meds while pregnant

almost mommy replied: "Nope, i just dealt with my anxiety like other people have to. Its not really best to be on medication while pregnant. Just deal with it."

someoneoutthere replied: "I took Prozac during mine. I was on Effexor, but they switched it. They said it was one of the safer ones and my mental health was VERY important as well as the babies health. But if I wouldn't "make" it through the pregnancy, than neither would the baby. If you need the medication and they say you can take it, then take it!"

lisa s replied: "i would check with your doctor before taking any thing while pregnant"

Holly M replied: "yes, even though it is not advised, unless you have seriouse issues that can cause unhealthy stress on the baby, then the risks may far outwiegh not being on it."

cinqsou replied: "Lady think long & hard about what you put in your mouth during pregnancy. Only what is perscribed by your Dr. & only if absolutely necessary. Many babies have paid a dear price all their lives because of what mom took while pregnant. Be very careful."

daiseywildflower2000 replied: "i was taking zoloft and my doc said it was safe to take.. but i did some research and the studies show no higher chance of birth defects, but that it does cause the baby to have withdrawl symptoms if taken in the third trimester until birth.. the higher the dose the more withdrawl.. although my doc. said he wanted me to take it because my anxiety is so bad, i decided not to because of the withdrawl after birth.. you have to decide the risk you are willing to take...its a class C drug..."

Have any of you ever taken Wellbutrin or Xanax during pregnancy at all? I am on Wellbutrin and Xanax. I have extreme panic attacks if I do not take my Xanax. I have talked to my doctor and he said to take it easy on the Xanax as much as I can. I have completely STOPPED the Wellbutrin because I know it can cause birth defects.Xanax isn't a class C either, but God knows stress let alone an anxiety attack would not be good while TTC. I am TTC and am not actually pregnant right now. My husband and I had sex on all my fertile days this week though and I tried every trick in the book to help those little swimmers! So my question is have any of you taken either of these at all during pregnancy and had a healthy baby? I'm not looking forward to the Wellbutrin withdrawal, but I will do it if I have to so i can have a healthy baby! I also hope that these meds will not hinder my chances of conception. Help! I'm usually okay once i'm actually pregnant too, i'm just worried about taking it during conception and all until I get my BFP.. ? Oh don't worry, i stopped the Wellbutrin yesterday. That would be possibly right before or after conception that i stopped taking it so that aspect of it should be ok.

Angel replied: "My sister had extreame panic attacks as well... and while she was pgnt the Dr's made her stop all medications. She actually did just fine... her hormones from being preggo balanced her out. She actually is still doing better afterwards. It kinda shocked her body I think? Her mes have lessoned and she barley ever has attacks now."

Piaz replied: "Talk to your doctor, but maybe you should go through withdrawal before you get pregnant? I wouldn't take it during the first few weeks after BFP, too, to get past most of the organ formation. If you are worried about birth defects - my son's heart defects occurred probably right around the same time I learned I was pregnant - right when his heart formed. I was on a small dose of generic Prozac for generalized anxiety. I was told by several doctors that it probably, mostly likely was not the Prozac, but I weaned off during the end of that pregnancy anyway. We moved and I consulted a different speciallist preconceptually, and he told me today that he firmly believes that all SSRIs, etc, can definitely cause cardic defects, and that I should stay off for now. That is no problem, because I have stayed off, even through my son's death, and the agonizing months since then, when there were times I was begging my husband to "go get me medication" for the anxiety and depression and sadness. I started going to yoga classes, which helped me control my anxiety a lot!"

Hotmama replied: "My doctor told me that wellbutrin can make it very hard to conceive. If you have quit taking it already then you are on the right path. Just make sure that you wing yourself off. Doctors say that you can not just quit cold turkey because that will make your anxiety even worse then before you started taking it. Does your doctor know that you are trying to quit the meds. I didnt listen to my doctor and just quit taking it altogether. Well BIG MISTAKE! It was awful! I was so mean that I didnt even want to be around myself much less anyone else. Good luck!"
