Dog depression cures? My dog is depressed. :[ Her name is Sophie. All she does is mope around. She is not quick to drink and she will eat, but not as much as normal. She runs away from physical contact and when we pick her up she will just lay limp in our arms. The only cures that I could find online were Prozac, and I am not going to give her Prozac! =(((

Won C replied: "ummm.. There might be something medically wrong. Try taking the dog to the vet."

Bonzie12 replied: "How do you know she is depressed and not sick? Have you taken her to the vet to have her checked out. Not drinking and eating are signs that something could be wrong. You didn't mention her age but if she is not an older dog she should be more active. Maybe a check with your vet should be your first step in getting her well."

itch replied: "There is a shot."

tiff replied: "How do you know she is depressed you are not a vet (or you wouldn't be asking)? She needs checking by a vet and any medication which she might need must be prescribed by a vet. There could be something serious going on with your dog, get her to the vet as soon as possible."

Pillow Poof replied: "well,u could pay more attention to her.you should take her on walks more and get her some toys."

sparkels_wanted replied: "Dogs that are in pain usually act like that. try taking a chunk of her skin between your fingers and squeezing it. if it takes a while to go back to normal, then she is dehydrated. She needs to see a vet. I have had a dog that started to act just like that and it turned out that she was sick.... is she showing any sign of happiness when you walk into the room??? how old by the way"

plynn_03 replied: "She really should be seen by a vet. She could be sick."

Natural cures and philosophies for depression? I know that my depression is a culmination of my entire life, meaning outside factors other than what is just going on with my brain chemistry. That being said, I would love it to be easier to accept the difficulties in my life. I have no real family and no real friends. Obviously I would love to get out there and make a good, whole life for myself but I've always been quite shy. Becoming depressed has just made my shyness crippling and made me have no hope for ever establishing the life I see for myself in my dreams. The problem I have with medication is that I want to be natural and not have to worry about substances in my body for long periods of time. Plus, I'm only 18 and I don't want to become suicidal as I've heard that Prozac often does this to people of my age...And if I want to get off of it I don't want it to mess up my head even more...Are there any excercises, natural cures, philosophical approaches that you could share with me for overcoming depression?

S©O®P1AN replied: "Here is a treatment plan from the book 'Nutrition and Mental illness' by Carl Pfeiffer PhD MD, for depression take: 1. B6 and zinc, taken in the morning, as P-5-P Complex supplement 2. zinc, 30mg, bedtime 3. Deanol {DMAE}, 5 drops, each morning 4. Vitamin C {1000mg - 2000mg, as Magnesium Ascorbate} and dolomite For an entirely Herbal remedy, consider: 1. 300mg St. John's Wort 2. Kava Kava 3. 60mg Ginkgo Biloba 4. Also consider supplementing 5-HTP, 30mg per day 5. 400mg SAMe, this has been called the instant antidepressant If your depression has lingered for a while: 1. Check if you have candida overgrowth 2. Get a blood test for histamine levels 3. See a orthomolecular nutritionist/doctor, and/or a good naturopath Synchronising your Circadian Clock Most depressives have distorted circadian clock, and abnormal sleep patterns, the following will re-sync your internal clock. 1. 30mg Melatonin before bed time {the chemical hat make you feel sleepy: Melatonin}, or 5-HTP 2. Hot Bath, Exercise {4-5hours before bedtime}, and sex {releases chemicals that makes you feel sleepy} 3. Well i have never had to try the 3rd option, but i suppose warm hot chocolate or listening to a relaxation CD, like Brain Sync. Lifestyle changes 1. get 30minutes of exercise per day, e.g. swimming, yoga, or brisk walking. Proven to beat depression, faster than antidepressant medication, in one published scientific study. Exercise outdoors if you can, you will get the added benefit of fresh air, and Vitamin D production from sunlight. 2. Drink/make Kefir, very healthy for the gut, and can cure depression. Source: 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome' book, by Dr. Natasha Campell MD 3. Learn Emotional Freedom Technique, preferably with the aid of a EFT qualified teacher. 4. Read the religious scriptures of the religion you follow. If you do not have any religious scriptures or do not follow any particular religion, consider reading the Holy Qur'an, this heals the soul. 5. Get plenty of sleep, atleast 8-hours, go to bed at 10PM, as this has been shown to be the ideal time. 6. Last but not least, consider juicing fresh organic fruit/vegetables, look into Gerson Therapy. Buy organic fruit/vegetables in bulk from local Farmer's Markets to get yourself a bargain. Best of luck. May your depression be lifted."

blacksockbandit replied: "I struggled with depression for years before finally seeing a therapist and realizing that the depression was just a symptom of an underlying condition. I STRONGLY recommend seeing a therapist and finding one that you are comfortable with. While natural remedies are great, I think that most people looking for natural options don't want to end up on a strict regimen. Rhythm therapy - and understanding your circadian rhythm - can be a BIG help. St. John's Wort can help with moods, but you have to commit to it. Vitamin D supplements work well too - Vitamin D helps your body to absorb calcium, which can make you feel more calm. Your body makes vitamin D naturally when you are in the sun, but if you're not in the sun much you may want to consider a supplement. And, as lame as it may sound, pick up Depression for Dummies. Sure, the title may be counterintuitive, but I have found these books to be good resources as far as understanding the basics and helping to build a solid plan."

An man of 70 taking Prozac one capsule everyday for over one year. Is that good or harmful? Prozac had cured his melancholia many year before. After that he take it only when he had a depression. Now he taking regularly hoping to prevent recurrence of melancholia.

can i be cured from depression without medicaments? i was depressed since i was i little girl, now i am a married woman and i am afraid it could ruin me and my husband. i was using medicaments such as zoloft, prozac, and many other types that goes with in the therapy. now i am in a new crisis, i have no motives for a thing i am trying but i can not any longer. i wanna be ok, but without medicaments or any kind of therapy, i think i can but i need a bit of help, tell me how to help myself.

nkf711 replied: "Since this has been a problem from childhood I would tend to think meds would work on you, of course finding the right one can be hard. There are several possibilities as to why they are not working....1. Misdiagnosis-you could be a bipolar type person who never really hits mania, and a mood stabilizer like depakote or lithium might beneifit you more. 2. Alcohol consumption- if you consume alcohol regularly there is no way a medication can help you chemically. 3. Need for therapy.. This is assuming something tramatic happened when you were young... In this case you may have to work on yourself for years and be patient with yourself, truth is you may be sick enoguh that in the past you enjoyed the extra attention you got from being ill, and now its getting old but you cannot seem to break the cycle. The question is hard to answer, some people can get out of a depression without meds, they arenot the answer for most people, but a tool to help you get the answer, imagine trying to build a house without a hammer and nails, it can be done, but it will take alot longer to do it without them. I think the best thing to do is to sit down, write a long list of things you are doing that cause depression for you....that is the things YOU are doing that influence it, it could be being a couch potato, drinking, working in a job you hate, whatever you are doing that makes you unhappy, then once done, rank those things on what is easiest for you change, keep this list around and starting changing behaviors that you are in control of. See if that works after 6 or so months, by looking back at the way you felt when you made the list and the changes you have made in your own life to make things better. A med in most cases can help along that time."

jac the hat replied: "I have been depresed and unwell since I was a child and intensive counselling helped me a lot - also helping other people helped. I think it is great to want to come off medication but you have to do it gradually and with help. I certianly coudln't have done it without help."

alicrl05 replied: "My personal experience is that you can. I recently had a break down and was very depressed and confused afer months of seeing a pychologist and a psyciatrist that prescriped xanax for anxiety and wellbutrin for depression I figured out that the answer to what ailed me could not be found in the pills I was prescribed and that what I needed to do was take a look inside of myself and deal with the issues that were depressing me. Also there is this this website called "Her Life By Design" it's for women but alot of the content relates to men as well."

Emily replied: "I've actually read an article, I don't remember where, that said most drugs that are supposed to cure depression don't work much better than placebos (sad thought). Therefore, my answer is: chocolate - gotta love those endorphins. Not to mention how it tastes amazing! Just don't eat too much of course, just a little bit now and again"

kcini8 replied: "Tell your doctor/psychiatrist, I've been on a few until Wellbutrin finally worked the best and is the only one that doesn't make you tired all the time, also you should be seeing a therapist THAT YOU TRUST! also laughter really is the best medicine, and taking time out for yourself like taking a warm bath and doing things for yourself to make you happy is important! good luck."

shaneris2 replied: "Think in terms of effective treatment, not cures. There is a quiz about depression, through sections 1, and 2, at ezy build, below: print the result, and take along to your primary mental health care provider. With depression, there is a choice of possible treatment types which needs to be made, and you can decide to use either allopathy, (modern Western medicine) with its reliance on antidepressants and therapy, or alternative treatments, which I advise trying first. This is because antidepressants are known to increase the rates of suicide, homicide, and aberrent behavio(u)r, particularly with young people, and often have unwanted side effects, such as sexual dysfunction, and/or weight gain. Tests have shown that apart from clinical (major) depression, their results were not significantly superior to those taking a placebo (inert, or "sugar pill"). Antidepressants retain a degree of long term effectiveness for only around 30% of people. There is a saying in the mental health field: "If the only tool you have in your kit is a hammer, you tend to treat everything as a nail". So it goes with doctors, and their prescription pads: handy, quick, and convenient, when trying to manage their large list of patients, and often allocating only 10 minutes to each. Most of them are only trained to provide antidepressants and referrals for therapy, with those whose depression is resistant to those treatments being advised to have ElectroConvulsive Therapy, (ECT) with its risk of permanent, partial memory loss. Therapy, while often effective at first, becomes "same old, same old" after a while, for many people. I now advise people to: (1.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily, (certified free of mercury) with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their freshly squeezed juice. If vitamin E is used, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it's synthetic, avoid it. (2.) Work up slowly to 30 - 60 minutes of exercise, daily. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). (4.) Use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2.c, 2.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2.q, 2.o, and section 53, at whichever works best for you. (5.) Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy. (6.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, or a supplement, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at and, instead of taking around 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Optimal levels are 50 - 55 ng/ml (115 - 125 nmol / L). It should be above 32 ng/ml. Don't use medications and supplements together, without medical advice, except for Omega 3, which is safe, anytime. Omega 3 fish oil supplements: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid (omega 3) ----360 mg.DHA (docosahexaenoic acid (omega 3)-----240 mg Take enough supplements to attain, or exceed the levels (no possibility of overdose) of those every day, with an orange, or the juice of a freshly squeezed orange, grapefruit, or other antioxidant. (make sure the epa is higher then the dha) important for adults... kids need the opposite levels: more dha than epa, but all are beneficial, if you can't achieve the recommended proportions. They should be certified as being free of mercury, and if containing vitamin E, it should be shown as from a natural source; otherwise it is synthetic: avoid it! Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, (60% of depressed people have low vitamin D levels!) using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult to achieve. If the above is insufficient for you, after several months, (unlikely) try one of the alternatives, such as the neurofeedback, magnetic, or low current electrical stimulation, or EMDR therapy, (see sections 33 - 34) keeping ECT back, as a last resort."

mandisueboo replied: "I was on antidepressants, and though it seemed to help at first, over time I didn't notice as much. So, I went out and got a lot of sunshine. Probably sounds odd, but it worked for me. Something about being outside in the fresh air, going for walks, being around nature....made me feel better. So, if you have the ability, I'd say try to spend some time outdoors in the sun. Good luck to you."

jimgray2 replied: "The problem might be that your expecting immediate results. I have bipolar disorder and had to be on medications for a year and a half before they finally stopped my mood swings. I started off on one medication and had to add two more and I also had to up the dosages on all of them multiple times. Or perhaps you've been on Prozac for a while and it's stopped working, or maybe it's just ineffective on you. So, you need to either switch medications or up your dosage. Also, medications are best for treating permanent hereditary disorders. If you're just depressed for the time being they may not help you. You also need to make life-style changes. Your therapist can help you with that. Don't waste time with supplements. Most of them are just placebos. Some may contain chemicals which do things to you, but their effect is unpredictable and could even be dangerous. If people say studies back up that they're effective or that they've been proven to work, it's often only by a single study and studies are frequently biased. Vitamin and mineral supplements pretty much just get flushed out of your body, you need a proper diet, THAT is actually important to treating mental illness. Use the food pyramid. There is barely any research to suggest that Omega 3's positively effect mental illnesses. But a lot of people take them anyway since they're probably harmless and you need them for your health anyway. Hell, I took them at one time. But it just got too annoying taking ten massive pills a day and they didn't really do anything anyway, unlike the real medications. Yes, the studies say you need about 10 grams a day: So basically try adjusting your meds, therapy, better diet, and lifestyle changes to reduce stress. Exercise also, it reduces stress and is good for your health."

Taylor replied: "My friend is on Lexapro and she said it works wonders for her and even I can see a difference and she says even her daughter can tell a difference, and her daughter is only 5"

Pat replied: "Wow shaneris2 wrote a book of an answer for you. I don't' know too much about this area but I heard it takes a while to build up in your system and that you feel the effects eventually. Not too sure which medication that is though, they probably all work differently. Therapy has worked a bit for me at times. Mindfulness meditation is VERY useful for me. Maybe one of those two in combo with something else would put you over the top."

What is the difference between depression, bi-polar and compulsive disorder? Are they treatable? I have depression for three years. I had been taking imperamine for two years with no cure. One week before I started Prozac but I have to terminate it since I couldn't stand it. When I see Yahoo answers I suspect that I have also compulsive disorder. Could you please tell me the difference between them?

antiekmama replied: "I have a child with all 3 and panic dissorder. You need to get good professional help. There are meds but it is a hit or miss situation , so you need to try several before you know what will work. You unfortunately need a psychiatrist who can write the prescriptions versus a psychologist. It costs money and so do the meds. Prozac I doubt would have helped with OC, I don't know but I doubt it. I am on Lexapro for depression and it helps 100 percent with my daily life. Good luck to you."

angelle_76 replied: "Depression is a disinterest in life and a constant sadness the things that used to bring you happiness no longer do and you find you are unable to just pull yourself together without some form of medication or counselling. Manic depression/bipolar disorder causes a peson to suffer extremely severe high moods followed by extremely low moods. OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is a form of ritualistic behaviour that has to be continued every day or everytime you do something depending on obsession eg germs people are known to wash their hands until they are sore before touching anything after touching anything. It is like severe routine but if they are interupted or something is altered in their ritual they can become increasingly anxious or aggressive. All are treatable with the correct meds and correct therapist or counsellor to suppress symptoms or alter behaviour manic depression cannot be cured only maintained by taking meds to stabilise mood. Depression can be treated depending on level and severity of it it may recur continuosly and with ocd cognitive behavioural therapy is usually successful as it helps change the way your thoughts are processed making you think more positive. Please do not try and diagnose yourself you must go and see gp and inform him of every symptom you have so he can either correctly diagnose and treat you or refer you to a psychiatrist who will be able to correctly diagnose you and prescribe correct medication for that diagnosis.Being aware you have a problem is the first step to overcoming/fighting that problem. Good luck."

shandell replied: "Depression is a general feeling of hopelessness, disinterest in activities, usually accompanied by sleep disturbances, and can include episodes of crying without any apparent reason. Bi-polar disorder is a disorder in which the individual exists on one of two polar opposites all the time. These two polar opposites are very low and very high mental states. The individual goes from being severely depressed to extreme happiness (referred to as "mania" or "manic episodes") both without any apparent reason. Obcessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which an individual has an obcession in the mind that leads to a compulsion in behavior. For people who wash their hands until they bleed the obcession is with germs. They think they can't get the germs off of their hands, which leads them to the compulsion to constantly wash them. I have also seen individuals with OCD who have rituals they must follow down to the letter in order to calm their anxious state of mind. All three can be controlled with medication, and I believe counseling is necessary when taking meds of this type. Some anti-depressants (Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor) also help treat anxiety disorders like OCD. Bipolar disorder is usually treated with an anti-psychotic drug, and some of these can have permanent side effects. Before taking an anti-psychotic, I would certainly get a second opinion. Always make sure you research thoroughly via internet, library, etc. on any disorder you are diagnosed with. Knowledge is power."

Can you have depression and anxitey and be without Meds?is there anyother cure? I have been on prozac, eeffxor, cpirla and zoloft with no much help i decided to stop taking zoloft .

Mrs.Foster replied: "Try Cognitive-behavioural therapy - changing your thinking and behaviour can be helpful. Be persistent with your Doc or Psychiatrist- if your treatment isn't working they need to fix it..."

Your_Star replied: "Yes, you can how both without meds.. I think the only cure is to just make sure you have enough reinforcement that you don't need that. I used to take all those meds to, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Try therapy. But every therapist is very different...it's really really hard to find a good one. good luck!"

Auntiejen replied: "Well you should consult your Dr. I dont think your supposed to stop Zoloft Cold Turkey you Turkey. Everything is going to be ok. Try some Holistic web sites. I know that St. Jones Wart (herb) is a great sub for prozac. Do you try to stay active. That really helps out when your down in the dumps cause you'll lose weight and feel better about yourself. Then you will want to be out more.. then depression will be a thing of the past because you will be so buisy. God Bless you beautiful heart. Everything is going to be ok."

Worshipful Heart replied: "good idea to stop taking hte meds. I highly recomend the book "The Diet Cure" It talks about amino acids - which naturally occur in the brain. For wahtever reason we can be deficient and it can cause all kinds of issues. This book will give you a self test to help you figure out what amionos you need and it will give you a rundown of what each one does for you. After a couple of weeks to a couple of months you are likely to not need them any more - your body will balance out and produce what it needs, you may need an occasional boost but after the initial therapy you should do fine. There are no side effects if you take them properly because they naturally occur in your body. think of it this way- you are not zoloft or prozac deficient- these things mask the problem and cause new problems. Find out what your body is lacking and then feed it!"

lmrm08 replied: "I myself was on Zoloft, and did not like the way it made me feel. I asked the doctor to give me something that would work on my body overnight. He prescribed me Elavil. It not only helped me sleep but it helped my depression and anxiety. I am no longer on any meds at all. Elavil helped me come off very easily not like Zoloft or Prozac which are very very addictive. I am now much happier and feel a lot more comfortable with myself. I wish you the best of luck. If you need to talk feel free to send me a message. I will try my best to help you however I can."

idahoreptileprincess replied: "I think you definately can manage these illnesses without meds. The key word being "manage" instead of cure. I work as a psychiatric social worker and I tell clients that while medication is a piece of the treatment process, there are other avenues. Counseling and behavior modification programs can be very helpful. I recommend "The Depression Workbook". I can't remember the author but it is a popular book and really easy to find. Biofeedback has shown quite a bit of success with anxiety as well. I also have some of my clients working on a free online program its just called The Panic Program and you should be able to find it through a search engine. There are many other meds than the ones you listed that you can try. It may take some time to find the right one. Try to be patient and definately do some non-medical interventions as well. Good Luck."

tonyintoronto@rogers.com replied: "Uh-oh ! Don't stop taking Zoloft , please ! Is your doctor keeping your dosage always the same ? Try an extra 100. millagrams in the morning. You also need to have clonazepam when on Zoloft. That will balanace you out. We all suffer from anx. and stress but most people drink or self medicate. Be proud of yourself for taking the right pharmascutically pure medication. Many people feel good after taking a few months of Zoloft, get off it and end up suicidal or manic and that's preventable. Also if you want , instead of taking Zoloft you can take ST. Johns Wort. It will pick you up but see your doctor first. I know it's a very serious thing to have to live with but at least you are not in bar all day or home by yourself drinking yourself into oblivion secretly or around drunks. You are doing well. Keep up the good fight and proper in every way of life. -lol-T I should add that Zoloft does not work on 20 % of people. If you excersise every day as soon as you get up in the morn. you'll be fine all day, but that's hard to do when your depressed. Yoga, peace of mind does it for a lot of folks.Shut the world out once a week. Get into a routine . Find something that you have a passion to do and make it happen. That will override any depression because it produces Endo-morphs and Ecto-morphs.I got into film and fashion on my own from scrath and it always gets me evened out."

What do you think endorphins are made for? Growing more hair? There are mysteries in life. Your body will produce different chemicals when you are maturing depending on the kind of life you live. You will be a different human. Some will call it a sickness but maybe it is not. This has been going on since man could talk."

I was getting more healed and my mental became more better than before because God is my healer and I asked Him .. He did.... Jesus is the hope for every one!Jesus is my medicine so is yours , too. Try Him. I dont use the meds anymore."

Sue S replied: "You have to find coping methods. For some it is meds and for some it is therapy, others need a combination of both. You have to find what works best for you, but its best to do so with the help of a professional."

rosy replied: "No, my dear, you can not be without depression or anxiety if you are not medicated by your Psychiatric. That is very important, so , if you want to be well, without anxiety, without depression, you better go to your Doctor. I just want to help you, bu it you don't want any help....stay feelling bad emotionally. That is my advise. I can tell you by experience, if you "dont want to hear", forget it, continue suffering all your life. Love.......for you"

cassie12 replied: "Medication is the crutch to help you overcome your anxiety and depression. You also need to work to change what is making you depressed and anxious. Otherwise the medication won't do any good."

H.A.L.O. replied: "Why stop taking zoloft and not the others? One should never take themselves off of any medication cold turkey without the assistance of a doctor. One needs to be weaned off so as not to hurt your health. I've seen normal people who started on pills and took themselves off end up in the hospital. You need help. Yes you can get over depression and anxiety without meds. There is a better way."

I am taking Prozac, I felt terrible yesterday now I feel great today? Hi, I am taking Prozac, due to a really nasty break up. My ex is on the same campus, and I panic when I see her. I started taking Prozac, and I felt terrible, yesterday I was feeling very down, but today I felt great. I used to absoulutly cringe when I saw her, today she didn`t bother me nearly as much. Its like an overnight change? I am taking 60 mg, and I upped the dose by 20mg 2 days ago? Is this the Prozac? Has it cured my PTSD, OCD and depression? I hope it has!! Please note, I know what SSRIS are, and how they work, and what they are prescribed for, so i don`t need an explanation, so I just need peoples experiences, and whether this is the Prozac? I hope it is, because I am tired of the anxiety, and being pulled down by the whole situtation. I want my optimism, confidence, and life back!!!! Also, its nearly 4 weeks. Is this the so called onset - the so called kick? I hope it is?

messtograves replied: "Morning, I have been taking Paxil( for years now essentially two weeks after I got married) which I imagine is similar and it really did help with my panic attacks after it got in my system. I do have one recommendation ask your Doc if you can get a xanex script. The stuff when taken as it is supposed to is mint. It works fast it does not stay in your system to long and you can function whether it is school or work and will really help when you are really stressed. One more thing and I know it is tough try really not to drink alcohol with this stuff , besides it being a depressant where you do not want to be now and it does mess up the interactions of the two drugs. Anyway you will gain control of your life back and it seems that you are being proactive by going to get that script , it is really good that there is no stigma attached with these drugs now , my dad is in the field and he says that they really are figuring out how to control how your brain is working. Good luck my man it will all be good, but ask for a xanex script to take as needed , it really is affective and works well with the SSRIS. TC messtograves"

bugs280 replied: "It might be. And the key word here is 'might'. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for meds like Prozac to be fully effective. Longer if the dose is being adjusted. Since you just increased your dose, and are now feeling better, I'd take that as a positive sign. Don't get in a hurry to call yourself cured. If you stop taking the meds, without your doctors approval you could 'crash and burn'. Stay on the treatment and give it more time. One day of feeling good is a good thing. The goal is feeling good every day. Trust me, I've been taking anti-depressants and anti- anxiety meds for about 8 years."

Anyone had severe depression & "cure" themselves? How were you able to live life again? I would say "cure", but I'm not sure that's the right term. Have any of you struggled with depression and never thought you would live life happily..but been able to turn things around and enjoy peace in your life once again..along with a positive mindset and attitude? I'm normally a very happy & positive person. I haven't had depression since my teens...but a decision I made, about 2 years ago, triggered my depression...and it's getting worse and worse. I feel like I am going crazy. I lost it the other day and start crying and hitting my head on the wall trying to scratch my face and stuff ( I know this sounds psycho..it's really embarassing). I found out I was preg. @ 4 weeks and due to medical risks, the docs advised an abortion. This was horrid..I don't believe in them..and wanted this baby...so even though I was still at the phase that is "tissues"..it was painful and I am slowly spiraling into the deepest depression ever. People keep telling me it wasn't my fault and that I shouldn't waste my life dwelling on it. Even days I may not be triggered by it..I know it's in my subconcious. I am insecure..have the lowest self esteem in the world now..and just have a very negative/miserable outlook on life. I really hate myself. Counseling hasn't helped much, as I have never met a woman with my specific situation. Not to sound like a jerk, but I can't relate to women who had ab's for reasons such as : no money..being young..etc. I can def relate to their pain though...if there was any. I have heard Wellbutrin and Prozac have changed lives. I'm trying to work through my grief, but it's hard when you're not mentally right. I've been out of it for almost two years now. Thanks in advance Yeah counseling doesn't really work for me. I'm afraid though..I have been feeling really suicidal for 3 days and it's just getting bad. It shouldn't have taken me so long to bounce back.

DisgruntledCynic replied: "Counselling isn't going to work if you are going to try and meet someone who was in the exact same situation as you. Depression is depression, no matter what caused it. Anti-depressants can help some people, but it's really only a temporary solution because eventually you do have to stop taking them and you will need some learned coping mechanisms to fall back on when you are depressed. I would talk to your doctor about your options and ask for a referral to a counsellor who specializes in working with women."

adrian<3 replied: "First off, I just want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I have dealt with depression (as has many of my relatives, including my mother). I used to hate when people said "just be happy". You just want to smack them when they say that. But after thinking about it, that kind of is the answer. You have to decide that you want to beat this depression. You have to say to yourself, every single day, that you are not going to let this depression control your life. You will "just be happy"...eventually. It takes time to "cure" it. You just have to keep trying and keep telling yourself that you're not going to be taken down by it. Start out small. Go for walks, sit outside in the sun, take bubble baths. Anything to just calm you and get your mind off of things. Being sad isn't going to change the past. You have the whole rest of your life ahead of you, don't spend it being upset. No matter how many tears you cry, how many times you hit your head on the wall, or how sad you feel...the past will stay the same. Each day, find the positive things in life. Even if it's just the smallest things. Remind yourself of these things and slowly you will become a more positive person. That's all the advice I can give, but my last piece of advice is to also speak to a doctor about this. They will help you with other treatments and help you understand how to beat this depression. Good luck and God bless."

ME replied: "First step is to acknowledge. Second step is to learn if whether or not you are coping with the problem or running from it. Third-accept that medication, although it may help, is NOT the cure for your problems but a temporary measure. I've been through some tough times and given scripts and offered counceling-I did both but when I came to the realization that neither of these measures was going to fix how I felt but me, by me and my future choices. One way I coped with a pregnancy loss through abortion-is I promised myself, no matter where I was in life, no matter if the father was going to be in the picture, no matter what illness my child had, no matter what threat it had on my life-that if I was given a life as a gift, I would do everything I could to cherish it and work hard to give that child a better life I ever had. That thought pattern pulled me out of my depression and made me determined on that goal-it made me driven. Look at your situation, decide what you can personally do if ever approached by this situation again and make a game plan. It may help to have a goal for the future which you have some control over, than a past you have none over."
