What are the effects of spironolactone on acne? Also,if I get 2 much potassium from this drug, what can happen? I am wondering about the drug Spironolactone and it's effects on people taking it for acne. Since this drug dramatically increases potassium in the bloodstream, what the the effects if a person takes too much potassium? Are their side effects? I thought potassium was a good thing, but I hear now that too much can kill you?

Shelly replied: "Too much potassium can kill you, short of that, it can cause a seizure."

Ramona H replied: "Excessive potassium can cause a heart arrythmia (irregular rhythm). When taking any drug that can alter electrolyte balance, periodic blood work needs to be done."

Has anyone used Spironolactone for acne? I just got the Mirena IUD and it's causing some spots to appear on my skin. I want to try Spironolactone. Has anyone had success with this drug for acne?

panda9386 replied: "I work for a dermatologist and Spironolactone is a great treatment for acne stemmed from hormonal causes. It helps keeps your hormones in balance, and if your acne is coming from your IUD which happens if you get one with progesterone, Spironolactone is the best option for treatment, seeing as you don't need to be on an oral contraceptive."

Can men take Spironolactone for acne? I ask this because I've been checking out reviews on acne.org and everyone of the reviewers are females. This stuff seems to work very well, but can men take Spironolactone?

SPIRONOLACTONE Ffor my ACNE and over productive OILY SKIN and hair? i went to the dermatologist today wiht my acne and over productive oily skin and hair and he prescribes me spironolactone and some other products has anyone been prescribed this and how well has it worked for you?

Ugo replied: "Spironolactone is a diuretic. I've been prescribed it before for that reason, to combat water retention, but for acne? I've never heard of that to be honest although I do know it affects your hormone levels also so perhaps that's why you've been given it. I must say I do sometimes get acne as well and while taking spironolactone I never noticed any difference one way or the other with it. But we are all different!"

SZO replied: "The only thing I used was a natural method that cured my acne permanently. You have to learn how to do it, though. A step-by-step guide is available:"

Spironolactone for acne...how long until it works? I was prescribed Spironolactone for acne about 1 month ago. My face has gotten a little bit clearer, but my chest and back are still absolutely horrible with breakouts! Should I give up on it and ask my derm for something else, or is there still a chance it could work? -What do you mean by "OC"? -I've used Accutane before, but the breakouts came back eventually, and they are now worse.

Stephen replied: "You need to take it for about 3 months to see what improvement you get. Its not standard treatment but acts as anti androgen. I presume you didn't want the OC"

Guru replied: "There is this new popular cream that people have been talking about. It was even televised on TV. It prevents future and existing acne, diminishes scars, and lightens skin and blemishes. Fast results too! (It has been claimed that major results can be seen within a week and no later than two weeks) Before and After photos are available at the given ebay site. This person is providing 1-3 week trial samples (Only for ONE DOLLAR.. definitely a deal) on ebay at: Search up "best acne solution ever" on ebay. First 100 customers can get the item for $1 for one week trial and up to 3 weeks. Or you can buy the whole container for $160 It's expensive, but the product DOES work. My sister and cousin who both have major acne have tried the product and they both give it thumbs up. I have also heard many great feedbacks about this cream. I don't have a problem with acne, but it seems to have great results on my sister who has moderate to severe acne. Her acne swelling went away overnight. I hope this helps. =)"

Can i ask my doctor to prescribe me spironolactone for my hormonal acne when i'm only 15? spironolactonen is a drug used for hormonal acne. i usually breakout before and during my preiod. i did some research and read that this will help hormonal acne. Am i allowed to ask my doctor to precribe this medication? I have a new doctor so i think i will bbe uncomfortable. and What can i do if the doctor refuses to prescribe it for me?

Phil replied: "Spionolactone isn't an acne medication... it's a diuretic used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. You're can ask your doctor to prescribe anything, but the decision is theirs."

Does spironolactone really clear up acne? I have good blood pressure and I know that this drug is used to treat high blood pressure. Will this drug affect my blood pressure? Also, is it one of those drugs that makes your acne worse before it gets better or does it gradually clear it up over time?

Caleigh G replied: "Natasha, I started having really bad acne problems starting when I was 16. I had acne on my cheeks that was making me self-concious. I tried Proactiv, Oxycerin, and even the Asso Gold Cleaning Bar with dismal results. I wound up contacting a dermatologist. After 2 months nearly all of my acne cleared up. I recommed you try finding a local dermatologist that can help."

When first taking spironolactone for acne, must there be monthly doctor appointments like when taking accutane? And has any women out there had great success curing their acne with spironolactone? It's supposed to help with hormonal acne. I would be happy to hear that this is an effective treatment besides accutane. Thank you people for answering my question. I have tried Proactive, retinoids, clearpores, antibiotics, natural remedies, and countless over the counter products but to no avail. I doubt I would ever get accutane because my acne is only moderate and the list of side effects are scary. I suspect my acne is linked to hormones which is why i'm asking about spironolactone. I've researched quite a bit but cannot find out how many follow up doctor appointments i need while on this med. I'm going on vacation for a month and would like to start spironolactone before leaving but frequent doctor appointments would inhibit me from this. Any helpful answers are appreciated. Sorry for such a long story =]

jandy replied: "spironalactone inhibits androgen production. Must be something new for acne treatment. there are many search websites on spironolactone + acne. I'd be a bit leery of this for now."

fabyonis replied: "I started taking Spiro about 1.5 months ago. It has been AMAZING for me!! I have severe acne and it has helped me soooo much. I haven't had any side effects from this drug and I don't have to go for any doctor visits, although you can always go to your doctor and have them check your potassium levels if this is a concern for you. Most people say it can take 3-4 months for it to work, but for me, I started noticing results in 3 weeks!! I've had acne since I was 12 years old and when I turned 23 my acne got worse. I went from having moderate to sever cystic acne. It was so bad that it hurt every time I washed my face. My Dermatologist put me on Spiro for only ONE month and then took me off it. I wanted to keep taking it because I feared that as soon as I stopped taking it my acne would come back so I went to my gynecologist and he quickly wrote me up a prescription with 11 refills!! It's kind of strange... my dermatologist said it was strong medication and one month on it was enough, yet my gynecologist said that as soon as I stopped taking it my acne would come back and said there is no danger in taking it for a prolonged period of time. He just told me to go back in 6 months to check potassium levels. Overall, I would recommend it. You have nothing to lose. It's very CHEAP(I pay $8 for a month's supply... with NO insurance) and side effects are minimal. For me, it just makes me pee a lot, lol."
